I saw this today and thought it was pretty interesting. A public transit company is branching into real estate to help support its transit lines. Thoughts? Seems like the future to me.

The Metropolitan Railway in London did the same thing 100 years ago, this is nothing new.

I'd venture to say that most streetcar companies in the United States made most of their money off of real estate development and increasing access to developable land that was previous too far away from jobs.

All of major railways, both public and private, in Japan do this. Seibu in particular is basically a giant real estate holdings company that happens to build and operate railways to jack up the value of their real estate even more.

The past, you mean. It's been a thing since transit was invented. Colocation along a route creates demand for the product, provides additional revenues for reinvestment, and allows the transit operator to recoup some of the positive externality of their operations.
