I don't understand how the biggest economy in the World has so much trouble building high-speed rail when even developing countries are starting to get there. I guess the only way to really change things would be a massive Federal program to build new high-speed routes in key corridors (SF-LA-LV, Miami-Orlando, NE Corridor, Great Lakes, Cascadia), something like when the Interstate Highway System was built. Using standardized trains, signaling, stations... and killing alternatives (making the high speed line the most convenient option over flying and driving) it would even be profitable.

But I will say Florida has been able to pull it off with Brightline, they already are closing in on getting it done fully by next year or two to where they will build rails that go 125mph instead of just 80 starting out. As for LA and Los Vegas and San Francisco that is also being done by Brightline as well. It's just slow for now.

I live in Houston and my office is in Ft Worth. I commute up there twice a month for the past 2 years (wfh) and have been thinking about the train a lot.

Personally I don't see a point in taking it. I live very close to Hobby and just hop on a Southwest flight to Love Field and I'm there in 45 minutes. If you're on the north side of town just go to IAH and land at DFW. It's ~$200 roundtrip and a plane leaves every hour (packed with people). Rail or flight, I will have to use a car to arrive at my final destination anyways, so why the hell would I spend an extra 30 minutes driving further to a train station? I guess a train would be a little cheaper and more comfortable than a flight but the benefits do not outweigh the cost imo.

well there is always uber and taxis and maybe local light rail but the sprawls are so big. if the HSR dumps you out in downtown dallas you will need to board a 1 hour train to the DFW airport and then another 30 or 45 minutes to Fort Worth via Texrail. possible, but potentially shitty. i can see it being a little fun in your situation if everything works out but again you arent the typical case. you already have an early start and getting on the train would have less hassle than an airport.

it absolutely wont. people prefer to drive or fly in europe already because trains are the most expensive. especially when not booked in advance. on your typical day on your typical train it will mostly be empty and that is even during commuting hours

It's the exact opposite. People already leave their cars for airplanes, so no significant lifestyle changes are required to get them to use HSR instead. Improving public transit first just makes it easier for them to get to the airport - not a bad thing, but doesn't promote intercity rail.
