I imagine a fair bit of them have been stolen and re-sold at one point or another in their life.

from my experience, most stolen bikes are really shitty. the people who don't lock up their bike properly are the people who don't care about their bikes. the giveaway that a used bike is stolen tends to be the lack of information in the listing. I've seen listing where the seller doesn't know anything about the bike outside of its brand. also seen shit like "sold by original owner" where the seller doesn't know the fork is aftermarket.

any $20 d lock is going to need the same angle grinder as a $400 lock
