what's the future of eVTOLs for urban mobility and logistics. Are they actually a solid investment

every new technology is too expensive in the beginning of its lifespan. imagine the millions of investment money going into this technology and developing it to commercial viability.

Also operation costs compared to any fuel burning flying vehicles is going to be significantly lower, that's a huge advantage.

You might be thinking what about a parachute recovery system. Below a certain altitude those are worthless as they need height to deploy. Falls from 2 stories up have a 50% chance of a fatality and that only increases with altitude.

They do have a role a to fit like you mentioned. It's hard to imagine them flying in a city like New York for example but future cities might be designed with them in mind.

That's why type certificates and regulations exist. There's no way any eVTOL will commercially fly without its design and operation being perfected to cater to that.

That makes sense. When hovercrafts were built to cross the English canal they had to add a large amount of seats to compensate for operation cost and make tickets actually affordable to compete with ferries. It's really hard to do something similar for aircrafts.

It's a pretty interesting to think where eVTOLs will end up. One of the few places that is planning to adapt eVTOLs is NEOM in Saudi Arabia, but they are building their to be completely walkable cities with no roads in mind. It's going to be interesting to see how that turns out.

I think a lot of people ITT haven't actually read up on this thing or its business model.

It's more akin to a quad/octocopter with passengers than a typical airplane or helicopter. All systems are redundant so a battery system, a couple of engines, etc. can fail and it can still fly and land safely. Supposedly there is also far less maintenance than traditional copters, basically none except charging it and replacing batteries when they go bad.

I could see it working for building-to-building hops for high end executives in cities like New York where no form of transit is exactly fast for how short the distance is. Their business model is more akin to the yellow cab service mixed with Uber vs. selling it to private pilots. They claim the price would be akin to an Uber black (probably higher, lets be real).

What niche do they serve in the city? I can only see them being used for rooftop-to-rooftop and rooftop-to-ground (with a dedicated ground access point) transportation.
We could fix these issues by just installing trams in the sky to achieve the same thing.

Flying transports like this could definitely have niche uses and might have a future in less dense areas but scaling up and building infrastructure for flying transportation like this is a non answer for urban mobility

and that's why eVTOL have to compete with helicopters,
to replace helicopters eVTOL need to be better and cheaper
even if this happens it will be a slow and gradual process

This has a shit ton of engines, what are the odds enough will fail to make it unflyable? It's designed to be redundant so it can safely land in the event of a failure, I'd probably feel safer in one of these than a single rotor helicopter where you have to hope and pray you can autorotate it correctly after an engine failure.

Not really. eVTOL won't have the range or speed of a helicopter, it'll just be an easy-to-fly puddle jumper helicopter and maybe useful for something like a news copter application for traffic stuff.

Same, I thought I was doing something wrong, but it was actually just that bad. Easy as hell to fly, which would probably make licensure easier, but definitely not a fun thing to fly. Tourists would probably love it for sightseeing flights.

I mean if we really want to talk sustainable, any kind of helicopter that carries people is just too inefficient to be worth considering for general transportation (or surveillance) if you really want to minimize energy consumption.
