How does an e-bike compare to a motorized (gas powered) bike?

I am a university student and am looking for a cheap, fast transportation option, these seem to be the best two available.

These cruisers have 80cc motors on them and can go around 100 miles on 1 gallon of gas. They cost around $400.

Alternatively, an e-bike has less than half the range, but charging is basically free and they require basically no maintenance.

I guess my question is - how do gas powered bikes compare to e-bikes? Why are they less popular than ebikes?

Those things are notoriously unreliable and technically illegal. No telling how law enforcement will respond. You're limited to 1 horsepower and I havent seen any gas powered bicycle kits that fit that bill. Beyond that its a moped and requires a license plate and registration and maybe more depending on what state you're in if you're in the US.

Btw 1hp works out to 746 watts.

I had a friend buy one of pic related in high school for shits and giggles. Unless you feel like picking up mechanic work as your main hobby I’d take the ebike, otherwise you’re going to learn a whole lot about bike engine repair.

There's a reason that ebike are extremly popular and gas bikes never were. Gas bikes are cheaper up front but you should remember that you could easily be spending $300+ on gaas per year. That takes you up to $700. On to of that those chinese engines are shit and between parts and whatever you think your time is worth you could be up to $1000 for the gas bike after a year.
If you planned on having a job to pay for all this shit anyway then you should get a $1000 loan and build an ebike out of a mid drive kit with a cheap used bike.

Honestly, I bit the bullet and just did a financing option on a Radrunner, paid off half of it immediately so I didn't get cucked by interest. paid it off in full not too long ago and stuck some of their CST Big Boat Tires on instead of the stock, that shit is so smooth and fucking fun to use, I can recommend the fuck out of it.

if you already have a bike, buy in on an engine kit will be lower, but you'll match the buy in of an ebike in about a year (roughly, basing it off my ebike). look at hurley carver ebikes, the build quality is surprisingly good for the pedal assist + throttle single speeds. prices will cross 1000usf if you want multiple gears, but if the 200 miles of all season all weather riding i have on my hurley thruster (giggity) are anything to go by, id say they're worth the investment

These things are heavy as fuck. You want to be able to ride long and hard. Nothing else matters.

A good battery is looking to be $500, a mid drive is $400-$800. Do with that information as you will.

Build your own, OP. You can get basic bitch China doll kits off of eBay for under 200 all day. Put it on any cheap bike that will fit the engine and spend the rest of the money you were planning on spending on the finished bike on an expansion chamber, carb jets, and a muffler. Once you get these motors some new gaskets and find out what they like, they're pretty reliable. Have fun OP

Nobody cares if you have one of these anymore since the legalization and popularity of e bikes it can pass, cops will just say it’s a cool bike in my experience, and people think of mopeds as being big and bulky with no pedals so you’d get turned away if you try to register a motorized bicycle

Whizzers or whatever these are called now are a common project for shop/small engine repair class.

They'll buy a cruiser frame and attach a whizzer on there, take it apart beforehand and shore up the pieces and then bolt it on. It's a sophomore project for the kids who do industrial tech classes in HS.

There's a tremendous amount of misinformation regarding low horsepower motorized bicycles / mopeds.

When I grew up I always heard "If it's 50cc or under, you don't need a license to drive it." This is such a common belief that I talked to a bunch of people in Hawaii with no license at all who exclusively drive low hp motor scooters, and they told me "You can ride them anywhere, you just ride on the side of the road, you don't need a license." Except in almost every state in the USA, including Hawaii, you need a license to ride ANY internal combustion powered conveyance on public roads. Motorized bicycles, 50cc scooters, they're all classified as motorcycles and you need a license. In some states you don't need a motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement, you just need a regular car license, but you need some kind of license. But I guess in some jurisdictions, like Hawaii, the authorities just don't care and let the locals drive their 50cc scooters with no license at all.

The reason e-bicycles are so prevalent now is entirely because states have carved out exceptions for them. A bicycle fitted with a tiny wimpy ICE is classified as a motorcycle, but an e-bike with a massive electric motor and huge battery is classified as a regular ol' bicycle, despite the performance which may rival a 50cc scooter. It's pretty wild. The pedals on a lot of e-bikes are there just to comply with the law, a lot of people don't even use them.

You'll have to look up your local laws. Low hp ICE powered bikes / scooters are a lot more restricted than most people think.
