What's the appeal of BMX?

I see children often riding around on BMXs and I occasionally see an adults doing the same. Freestyle BMX is kinda cool, but there aren't any facilities for that (there are a few skate parks, but are full of kids on push scooters). BMX racing is fascinating to watch, but there are no race tracks here.

iv rode both on and off for a long time, they really help on hills and in wet conditions and you do feel way more connected to your ride and probably in general about 15% faster/more efficient

if you are riding to get anywhere or just for casual riding its not worth it.

if you mean for like doing tricks and going to skateparks you answered your own question, if you mean why do you see people trying to use BMX's for transportation its because they dont know any better and cant afford/dont want to spend money on a real bike so they buy the 60 dollar bmx at walmart, if you are wondering why black people do it then its a cultural thing but also the reasons above as well apply

There's this weird line in the bead of my tubeless tyres. It's almost as if someone ran a box cutter along them. Now, there's a leak from a point on this tyre and it's maybe as small as a pin prick, but a month has passed and it's still not sealing.
I got a local bike mechanic (who has a reputation for doing maintenance and builds for elite athletes) to set up the tyres, since the bead was too tight for me. I am now concerned that this bike mechanic used tyre levers far too aggressively, bent the bead and this is what's gone wrong.
If this is the case, then are my €100 set of tyres permanently fucked? A different bike mechanic said he had never seen a tubeless imperfection "that bad", but said the sealant should eventually make it work. But this tyre has nearly deflated twice completely, and the other tyre, which doesn't have a pin hole leak but has the appearance of being cut also seems to be unstable for tyre pressures, dropping at least 1 bar every 24 hours.

Clipless is comfy, and so are sandals in hot climates. Also go watch a recording of a BMX race and think about how much harder it would be if the riders' feet weren't attached to the pedals.

Does anyone have experience using their phone as a makeshift action cam? I'm getting a new phone because this one is sometimes failing to read the SIM card but is otherwise fine. I'm particularly looking for some way to mount it to the handlebars or to myself. I tested it by just putting it in my shirt pocket and I'm impressed by the results. Having it securely mounted horizontally and not jumping around should give decent video footage

Speaking of... why are tyre pumps so shit?
I used an old double barrel pump until it sprung a leak. I bought a Lidl double barrel pump and the tube inflates itself rather than the tyre... bought a track pump but the pressure gauge barely fucking works, which is great having to judge tyre pressure by feel. Am I just being cucked by big tyre pump or what?

pinarellos new tt bike is disc brake and they talk about all the design choices on the new bike revolved around trying to offset the penalty of disc, theyre also no more tubulars in the tour de france apprently.

Are these design choices really for progress or is it just marketing? I can't imagine tubeless tires being better than tubulars ever and the disc brake take over just seems silly, especially since how many crashes has happened so far.

If you're talking about stage 1 of the TDF, then crashes on a wet TT stage are nothing new and always happen regardless of the tech. To your questions, the only inherent disadvantage of discs and tubeless over rim and tubulars is a small weight increase, but these days when it's easy for manufacturers to get bike weights down to the UCI minimum then why not have the best possible brakes and wheels that are vastly easier to deal with? This is a case where the marketer's job is easy when the same thing makes sense both for pros and consumers.

I've ended up with a 26 inch wheel bso mtb with 19mm inner width rims to spend the summer. The tyres it comes with are 1.95 in width. Can I put roadie tyres on it? I found some 28mm gatorskins for 26 inch wheels that on paper should fit, but I am unsure if they actually will.

I think I see the 28mm Gatorskin you're talking about on their website, ETRTO 28-559. If you want to double check if they will absolutely fit, look at your current tires and try to find "559" labeled anywhere on them, sometimes listed as ISO 559, if you do see that then for sure they will fit. However, if you find another three digit number that's close to that number (rim diameter measured in millimeters) but not the same as 559 then they won't fit. In this case however, I think you'll be alright, 26" has been a long standard. As far as rim width goes, 19mm will hold, for 28 ideal road sizing for ISO 622 is 23 to 25 but I'm sure some have gone as thin as 17. For casual use, you'll be alright. It's fun to consider the tire shape though, with a thinner rim, the profile is more ballooned giving a rounder contact patch while going wider gives a flatter contact patch. There's always a balance to be found and I think 19 isn't far from modern standards, hell, a while ago 19 used to be considered wide with 15mm or thinner rims on road bikes. 26" wheels are smaller and stronger anyways, again, you'll be alright.

Going from 50 to 28 is going to feel fast af yo lol, even on a BSO. Good luck with the bumps, keep them inflated higher than you would with the 50 wide tires, like 28s are 60+ psi, on my own bike I do 70psi/80psi front/rear and check daily. CHECK DAILY, get used to lower volume tires losing air.

I normally ride 23 or 25 mm tyres on a fixed gear, so it's the other way around. This set feels very slow. Doesn't help that this is a hilly area. Normally I run the tyres at 120 psi so this shouldn't feel bumpy at all especially when it has a front suspension.

KHS carbon fibre bicycle with mixed Ultegra/105 groupset being sold for cheap due to frame damage in my area.

Should I attempt to get it repaired? I plan to make a trip back to my parents in two weeks and they have a shop specializing in carbon repair nearby. Is it worth picking up for components alone? What other precautions should I take?

So my carbon bike dropped with me on it at a complete standstill, I unclicked the wrong side for the balance and just tipped over. I hit my knee and the pedal got a scuff mark. I did a coin tapping test on the frame and it sounds fine. The frame itself didn't get a hit since my body was in between it and the asphalt.

Any concerns?

Like my body doing damage to the frame by hitting it? Yeah I didn't land on the frame my leg took the impact and the pedal first. The frame was still between my legs when I dropped it didn't touch the ground, more like suspended in the air between my legs.

it depends on the price and maybe the components are old and in worn condition so that they aren't worth all that much. maybe for a grocery getter if the price is really really good it would be worth getting a compromised frame but for a racing bike probably not, keep in mind the repair costs and the potential costs of repainting it and the new paint probably won't be as good as the original and will hurt the resale value even further.

One of the spoke crossings on my rear wheel is the opposite of the rest, all the others cross under the left spoke but one pair has the right spoke crossing over the left. Does this matter at all? I've gone at least 500 miles like this and had no problems, I check spoke tension by ear like once a month.

that's fine as long as you're aware. also, your saddle is too high. use this method to set saddle height: sit on bike, holding yourself up against the wall or railing or something. put the heel of your dominant foot on the middle of the pedal, over the spindle. rotate the pedal until the crank arm is lined up with the seat tube. your leg should be straight but not locked, and your heel should remain on the pedal. if you are sliding off the saddle to maintain contact, saddle is too high.

I have an old Hard Rock that has similar rear dropouts. It's pretty common for early 90s mtb, and there are also ones where the 'rear hole' is filled in.
The most reasonable explanation I've seen was that companies were just reusing existing molds during the transition from horizontal to vertical dropouts.
But yes, can cut that web out without any problems.

if the glossy finish is just scuffed, not worn all the way through, then you can probably just polish it with automotive polishing compound. painting it with nail polish should be a last resort, it will never be quite as good as the original finish.

jagwire does it on all but their most entry level inner cables, they stopped doing coatings and just do slick plus varying stages of extra polishing but according to at least one guy who tried lots of different cables the basic sport slick cables are the best. maybe you want some remaining roughness to hold the lube in place idk.

Your phone seems to have better stabilization than mine but your mounting method of shirt pocket isn't too different from mine, I just use a backpack strap phone holder with the top part folded inside. The torso is quite stable, I used to have a chest mounted action cam and that was pretty sick. Then for stabilization, I use shotcut (open and free video editor). Shotcut has a stabilization filter that analyzes then stabilizes video, also allowing you to adjust how much stability you want. The learning curve of shotcut however is steeper than more modern easy to use video editors.

I forgot to mention, I've tried handlebar mounts before and it isn't so good since twitching to steer ruins the video, makes it a jittery mess and sometimes the road conditions buzz just right where the camera loses focus completely or the sensor fudges out and blurs everything. 'Drawn' or 'die-drawn'. It's a different process (material pulled through a die vs pushed through a die).
Shimano makes a range of cables, though I'm not familiar with their low-end stuff. I would expect the Ali cables to be no better than Shimano die-drawn cables.

The one I had was a cheap one where my phone has better video processing, battery life, better built-in stabilization, and easier file transferring, just some of the things that makes a phone superior to a budget action cam. A nice action cam like a current gen GoPro would be sweet but it's beyond what I'm willing to spend right now. You also raise a good point about having another thing to carry, instead of let's say my phone which is always on me. Then if I'd like to record, I'd have to set everything up while with my phone, I just pull it out of it's holder, double twist gesture for camera, hit the red button, and we're in action. It's hard to beat that convenience

I am planning a bike-packing trip with my Specialized Allez along the Atlantic coast of France this August (328km ; total elevation 1250m ; luggage ca. 40-50kg). Touch ups are really hard to make unnoticeable. The best way is to find a shade of paint (nail polish works, but I have also used Testirs and the auto parts brands).
Apply thin coats very strictly, trying not to get any on the original paint, I’m talking like 10 coats, where each is like 20% opacity.
Then when you have decent coverage, you need to wet sand the new paint to blend in height wise with the old paint. (Which is why you try to avoid getting it on the old paint)
Then once the new paint and old paint are flush, yes a high gloss clear coat (a rattle can), to make it all uniform
I’d say practice on a a junk part a few times

It’s mostly not worth the time and effort

Yeah, the bike is fine. The condition of your ass is more likely the limiting factor.
Those stats are similar to an annual weekend tour I used to do. Easy elevation, but the distance is kind of rough for two days, would be better as three. Overall a fairly mild ride, so that's in your favor.

Even with a traditional touring setup (racks & panniers) that would be heavy. And it would make for a less enjoyable ride, hauling that amount of weight.

If it's aluminum and bb86 there's a much smaller chance of problems. Aero aluminum is a joke and locks you in to proprietary seatposts. Emonda alr is bb86 with no ugly dropped seatstays, but wouldn't be any more rugged than any other race frame.

I currently ride a sketchy no-name bike rebrand startup chinese frame with a disclaimer sticker on the top "not intended for racing, jumping, stunts" or something like that that's a paraphrase quote. The derailleur hanger design matches those shitty vilano bikes, so I'm assuming it's similarly shitty and sketchy. Every time I descend I think about this while going 40-50 mph.

Asking $1200, a boomer bought it and never rode it.

I'm pretty confident this bike actually hasn't been ridden. Look at the reflectors, dork disc. And more picks of drivetrain show almost no grease.

Pretend like it is immaculate condition and the carbon is completely fine. What's a fair price? $1200 seems high but the bike is in great shape.

Looks stock including the tires. If the molding seam down the middle of the tread is still there it probably really is unridden. BB90 bottom bracket is yikes. Clipless pedals on a noob's barely-ridden bike makes me think he crashed because of the pedals and gave up, but probably just my imagination. Check for damage anyway, naturally.

Most common serious problem is rear wheel damage. Try to run tires as wide as you can to cushion it.
If the wheel is out of true before you go or has uneven spoke tension, it's a good idea to get a pro to true it.

If you know how to true wheels take a spoke key with you, don't bother if you don't, you'll probably do more harm than good.

touring on a road bike, totally fine, be a ruthless weight weenie with your gear loadout though. Micro-organise everything.

This is the trick to getting tough tires on.
The bead of the tire is designed to sit on the hook of the rim.

The well of the rim has a smaller circumference than the hook. So if the bead of the tire is in the well, the tire will have more slack.

What you do is just go around the tire, pushing the bead into the well with your hands, and that will create slack, you'll be able to push a little bit more of the tire on the wheel. Then do it again. Again and again.

95% of tires won't even need levers if you do this, and it makes the impossible ones possible.

that's why shimano brake inner cables are 1.6mm
jagwire's entry level cables are also 1.6mm but the "slick" ones are 1.5mm
1.5mm vs 1.6mm is not an issue compatibility wise with the housing/liner
the 1.5mm are considered better

The last time I was machining cable fittings/lugs, I measured my brake cables at 1.63mm. These are die drawn, stainless cables.

Check out Light & Motion Vis series. (These were formerly called Urban series.)

Compact, good mounting strap, rechargeable battery. It has amber side lights (just mount the thing so they're not obscured by your wrists), and a not a flashing but a 'breathing' sort of pulse mode. Amazon says IP67, but I've taken them deeper than that while kayaking.

If the battery wears out, you can send it back for service, or lookup how to do it on Youtube (requires soldering). The oldest one I have is from... 2013 I think? I've replaced the battery a couple of times.

Some Schwalbe tires have a reflective sidewall. There have been a couple times where they've made a difference--you can kind of tell by a driver's reaction, how hard they mash on the brake. Two hoops like that are pretty recognizable.
Those sidewalls work very well in the dark, but a flashing/blinking light is better during the morning/evening transition periods.

It does represent how they look instantaneously. That's why I mentioned "two hoops are pretty recognizable".
But you're right, any kind of reflective device has to get the light to the observer's eye, so they only "light up" in a narrow range.

That's the first I've heard of that, so I looked into it.

One article from 2018, and a profile from 2021. The first makes it seem like all production was offshored, the second says they still manufacture some in the US (but doesn't say which ones).

judging on your pics, a bit lower is more correct than what it was before. sounds like you are familiar with the gym/lifting, which isn't really the same type of muscle usage. maximum power for cycling doesn't use the same range as leg stuff at the gym. its possible that having the saddle too high wasn't properly engaging the quads, and now that it's in a better position, you're using that inner quad muscle more properly. also, your leg position at the bottom of the stroke should mimic the extended but "relaxed" way the leg hangs when not touching the ground. stand on one foot or off a ledge or something to see what that is.

They used to be really good budget bikes with very sensible spec. Even a lugged fork. The blue one was a nice color.
Recently Fuji as a brand kinda died and i think they got passed through a few hands so iunno about the quality now on a new one. Also if the disc is any good.

Thanks man. So get this. I found where the size is written on it and it says 19"/48cm. I'm 5'4", so according to the size charts it's a good two sizes too big. But it feels right. I don't know what's going on here. I have a good 5cm more in my armspan but that's still in the range of size small.

My bike makes a ticking sound, doesn't matter if I'm pedaling or not. However it disappears when it's raining/the bike is wet. Sounds like it's coming from the rear wheel area but not sure. You don't need to be fit to go far, you just need time and the right mindset.
Think about it, if you ride like a granny, you're still doing 10 miles in an hour. If you start early in the morning, you can get 30 miles in before lunch, take a 2 hour break and get another 30 miles in way before it's dark.
All you need to do is eat enough and get a saddle that fits well. And those 60 miles in a day are your starting point without any exertion or training.

You don’t need any fitness to do long rides. You can ride as long as you want with zero fitness as long as your bike fits comfortably, you go at a reasonable pace for a multiple hour ride, and you eat and hydrate enough.

get a good saddle and play around with the positioning. wear gloves to help with hand aching. ideally, when your saddle is comfortable and properly adjusted, you don't put much weight on your hands and cramping becomes less of an issue.

you want the ass bones to touch the wide part. can't really comment on that saddle. my go to saddle for a bike is usually a charge spoon, which can be gotten for $30. they also have a wider variant called the charge spoon comfort. play with your saddle height, angle and position. you want to find a position where you don't subconsciously shift your weight forward to your arms.

it's possible to ride a too-big bike and have it work out. i have a bike like this. it's good way to get an upright riding position without an obscene amount of steerer tube and stem. it prevents you from having a more aggressive riding position, which you may want in the future. ride for while and see how you feel. if you feel like you want to lean more forward and go faster, you'll need a smaller frame.

Main reason why I am looking for a helmet is because the one that I am using right now is well over ten years old. It hasn't been in any crashes but I did drop on the ground many times. My bike isn't shifting right. Excuse my lack of experience while I explain this to the best of my knowledge. I inadvertantly crosschained (small small) and observed the chain being diagonal, watched the front detailer pulling it where it didnt want to go, and saw it detach from the smallest front sprocket. I out it back and now it doesn't like to climb the cassette. Most of the time it seems I have to down shift twice to get it to climb once and them upshift which moves the detailer but not the chain, effectively resetting it to where the number on the shifting mechanism matches the position of the chain. What can I do?

I went out for a first proper ride in clipless pedals (Ultegra SPD pedals), and during a hill climb, I had a horrible leg cramp that prompted me to fall. I seemingly managed to unclip successfully, but the cramped leg was unable to hold my balance and I was on the ground writhing in pain.

I couldn't even walk, I was limping. Fortunately, I was only 200m away from home, so I was able to hobble home, using my bike as a crutch.
Can cramps be related to clipless use?

Claris is good but the claris-tier bikes cheap out on other parts a lot of the time to keep the price as low as possible so might be better to get the Sora model if you can afford it.

I guess more specifically I want the fastest style of frame that can still take a beating. External cables and rim brakes because the alternatives seem like memes and I do my own maintenance in a less than well equipped garage. One single chainring and versatile enough cassette. Depends what 'offroad' means to you. Gravel bikes can handle some offroad and still be decently fast on pavement, but they're still not mountain bikes.

Tourney is name of the drivetrain components that comes on the best walmart bikes and the worst bike shop bikes. Reasonably functional but really you should aim higher. 'Claris' and 'Sora' are higher level components that come on cheaper road and gravel bikes.

Depending on the specific setup internal cables aren't necessarily that bad since magnets exist, but industry jews have decided that rim brakes will no longer be a thing and you vill pay extra for ze disc brakes. If your priority is ease of maintenance get mechanical disc instead of hydraulic.

Nothing I'll need suspension for. Little baby hills, dirt roads, forest trails, and well.. gravel. I'll probably get a gravel bike but I'd like to develop a base knowledge of the actual geometrical differences between them all before I decide.
