Yeah, last night I rode over to a neighboring suburb, full of rich people so they always spend $$$ on fireworks shows.

On the way there, I passed through an older development that recently had water mains/water meter work. Lots of cuts in the road, where the asphalt was replaced with concrete patches (it sucks to ride on). On one of those concrete bands, someone laid out a bunch of those TNT pop-it/snaps. So I hit that concrete bump POP POP.

700x25 tires, so I probably only exploded two of them. I whipped my head around, expecting to see a couple teenage boys watching their booby trap handiwork. But it was a two old guys, sitting in lawn chairs giggling.

It looks like after an 7-8 gap Strava is back to regular global heatmap updates. It updated at the end of May and end of June. It can be tricky fining a tell tale line on the heatmap that you know had to be you and within a specific timeframe.

Didn't take pictures today since my phone was dying on me and I was just enjoying the ride. Did some new routes, finally checked out one of the rail trails in my area. 13 miles to get there, a few miles cycling around the area checking out some shops, 12 miles back and forth on it, another 5 or so to head to my buddy's house. Played some disc golf, got some Wendy's and went over to my other buddy's place for some pizza. 32 miles total. Would have broke my cumulative distance record by an ever larger amount if I cycled back home. However I decided riding back after midnight was too sketchy even with full lights on my bike and low traffic volume. The people driving now will be driving like idiots and I have hills all over this place. Because this is America there is not enough street lighting either. I think I could have done it but the late hour was compounded the fatigue so I just took the easy option. Starting earlier would have also worked but I tend to wake up at degen o'clock. Always a chance next week to do another big ride.

With the weather lately I'd be better off riding in the mornings. But I don't sleep well enough to get up early. So baking in the evenings will have to do.

After a ride last Thursday evening I made a 2 lb batch of taco beef. I finally finished off the last of it at breakfast today. 19 buritos! I don't think I'll make a double batch again.

38C with humidex today, I think I shall pass on riding. That kind of heat and humidity makes riding miserable. Your sweat doesn't evaporate and you overheat. It would be nice to at least get a thunderstorm out of it.

Also did 38 miles today. It was fucking rough, ran out of hydration before half way even with two big bottles. Food wise I was actually fine, wasn't even that hungry when I came home (had one Clif Builder's bar while riding and a powerade). My pace was kinda good for me (minus a couple photo and bio breaks) but leisurely for anyone serious.

Here's a big dam at our reservoir I was riding around.

I'm too autistic for that - and believe it or not I saw maybe one convenience store/gas station in the middle. Everything was front loaded before I left civilized lands. The one town I wandered into almost every storefront that wasn't boarded up had closed by the time I got there.

Wtf just ride wherever there's people and ask for water, how hard is it? I've never been denied water, I've ridden inside other's people's property, asked people working the field, driving machinery, I've stopped cars in the middle of nowhere and I've yet to be denied water ONCE.

I caught Covid this weekend and can't ride for maybe a week - I'm hoping this is the worst of it and I turn around sooner than expected. But my bike needs work badly now and the co-op is only open Tuesday nights, I was supposed to go tonight.

That road is always quiet. Its one of several boulevards built in the 50s or 60s that isn't a main arterial road, but might have been intended to be at one point. Its an odd one, the only road in the area that isn't on a grid. Maybe a rail spur ran parallel to it long ago. There is an expressway a few blocks over that was built in the 70s where a rail line had been.

Don’t know how these threads work.
But my friend invited me to the beach on a bike that he had laying around there. The bike was totally to big for me, the handlebars were too high, the saddle became loose from the seat post, we had to battle wind on the way there and on the way back and now I’m sun burned as well. A great time was had. We did about 30km each way. Here are some pictures.

Big correction. Not 30km each way but 30km total. My legs are very weak as I haven’t ridden in a long time but where I have been jogging some it actually helped a lot when it came to breathing and being able to keep going.

Then you should have seen it and me on some “trails” that weren’t much more than scattered rocks on the tops of the cliffs as we went to the beach. Bike sucked but it was a bike and it’s there. Like /p/ says the best camera is the one you always have with you. This was the best bike.

First ride in a week, still sick. Super muggy and overcast but enjoyed myself despite that, good to finally be back on my bike. Nothing long of course Nothing long but I felt like my muscles were well rested and did some brief climbs and sprints comfortably enough. Don’t really want to get people at the coop sick if I’m still spreading so I think I’ll ride as is till next week. Crank is making noise, guessing bottom bracket. Some chain stretch according to my ruler after all, as a I suspected, but without a proper gauge hard to say if it’s enough to be a major concern. Front derailleur acting up again and performing like shit, especially downshifting.

I like how quiet the city gets in the evening, but there's still light because its summer. Granted this downtown isn't the most vibrant in activity at any time really. But the whole city really comes alive when students come back, lots of colleges here.

The street to the right is nearly a 20% climb, beyond my current abilities with this particular bike as two attempts demonstrated to me. I can get maybe halfway before I start to zigzag even while standing. Playing around with some calculators at my weight I think I'd have to pump 750 watts continously to maintain 60 rpm in my bottom gear there.

Nice. I got my 4th shot yesterday and the doctor told me not to do any sports for 3 days. So I went for a chill 30km loop. I decided to let Strava run which I don't usually do and I was actually surprised how much my stamina had improved as I could hold 25kph avg quite effortlessly which would have seriously tired me out just a few months ago.

Another visit to the rail trail with dad. Set some PRs, felt good to have bike in much better condition than last time. Also nice to not be riding at dusk this time, and coming down with illness.

The coffee at the end of the ride was a bit of a let down though, too much milk, no flavor. Very weak. Maybe the other cafe would have been a better choice (both are along the the trail).

Nearly broke my weekly mileage record which I gotta pretty pleased about considering I still have snot coming up when I'm breathing hard. Also was pretty fast for tonight's supplementary workout which had a good number of steep hills. I actually fit pretty well in my wedding attire thanks to these months of cycling this year.

Gonna be kinda bummed to be away from my steed while on this trip though, over 3 weeks. If I get a chance maybe I can rent a bike for a few days here and there but it'll probably just be cross training while I'm away from home.

For various reasons I would say myself (weightlifting and running experience, etc). I got into it first and influenced him to pick it up later, among others. However because I'm a good bit heavier I would say he could catch up alot if he applied himself more and made as much time to ride.

Lowered my saddle a few mm before today's ride and it made a huge difference in comfort. Legs felt better, butt felt better, shoulders felt better, wrists felt better. The sweet spot for a fit is so tiny it can be very difficult to find. I think I have a tendency to set my saddle too high.

I saw a guy today with his saddle really low today and his bow legged pedaling made it look like he was dancing gangnam style.

It seems like every time I need to order a bike part Shimano has changed the part number. It gets annoying having to double check yet again that I'm ordering what I think I'm ordering.

As time marches on there is a consolidation of part among older groupsets. Where there may have been 5 different 9 speed chainrings one for each groupset, they get merged into a new part that is better than the lowest end one and not quite as good as the top tier one.

SRAM jockey wheels are finally back in stock, so I ordered a badly needed set for my mtb. Also ordered a cassette for my next chain replacement.

Less luck finding a chainring, will probably be cheapest getting it from LBS due to shipping. Part number changed yet again, over the years I've used an FC-M660, FC-M580, FC-M532 and now its an FC-M533.

my "MTB" (more of a hybrid dressed up as an MTB) is also a decathlon bike, a cockrider st540. not saying it's good, but it's like the best BSO you could ever get, and I did weirdly sort of want a BSO to compliment my fredsled. You'd pay 25% more for a similar thing from TREKTREKTREK, or Spesh. and that would probably be a 29er, but not the good kind, and it would still be a BSO just with a "real" brand name on it.

not just bicycles either, I bought a waterproof jacket from them a couple of years ago and it's the best waterproof I've ever had. it was about £70 though. you could also get a £2.99 plastic poncho but it would be exactly that.

My glasses are starting to scratched up so after last night's ride I decided to book an eye appointment. I guess August is the time to do that as I was able to get in this morning. After the exam they gave me their sales pitch. Top end progressive lens would be $950 before picking frames. Ordered online from Zenni instead. I almost got progressives, then changed my mind and went for single vision. I didn't like the lens layout that dedicated the middle of the lens to mid-range ~15 feet and only the top for long range.

Stopped by the LBS before my appointment and a middle chainring ETA is somewhere between November and June.

I guess 36t used for trekking group sets is a lot less common than the 32t used on mtbs. If I was in the US it would be a lot simpler to get. There are online shops that have it but shipping to or even within Canada doubles the price. Most shops in the US use UPS / Fedex for all shipments to Canada. And even basic postal within Canada is as much as courier service from the US.

If the frame isn't bent or the headset loose, it's just confidence. At least that was what I was lacking and why I had struggled for so long, I tried to do it slowly (doesn't work) and I didn't lean back enough (more difficult). I was afraid of falling. Now I'm also afraid but I've noticed that the bike leans slowly and I always have time to grab the handlebars, it's just a matter of practice now that I can do it.

So this wasn’t todays ride but the most recent one. I managed to rent a bike on vacation while in Croatia on the island of Brac. I snapped a lot of photos but I don’t really want to spam the thread.

I tried gravel biking for the first time, it was FUCKING ROUGH with all the elevation and heat. Really should have started earlier. By the time I reached pavement again for the big climb I was exhausted, out of water, and seriously longing to be on a road bike. On the way back I took a spill at low speed, but came out okay with some minor road rash despite eating dirt. Helmet did its job and I didn’t lose a tooth, the tires could have been in better condition I felt but user error was 90% of it. I felt pretty guilty about the minor cosmetic damage - left GRX shifter got scratched up on the hood and lever. I might have dinged the chain stay too- went over some large rocks in the unpaved segments without thinking. Perhaps if the clutch was engaged it would have been fine but I honestly wasn’t expecting it and never had to fiddle with one before. Maybe I was thinking if it was necessary the rental place would have it engaged by default, but honestly I didn’t even know GRX had one at the time or forgot about it. I was surprised they didn’t have any protection on it any case, thinking about it.

I rented one of these shitters today on the isle of Brijuni. My vintage bike feels like a professional race bike in comparison. Also a horrible deal considering you could get 2 days of Ultegra on Brač for 32 Euro while here it’s 30 Euro for a day with these. I’ll say it was interesting to ride single speed. I might like to get an old track bike to tool around on following this experience but it would not work at all for the town I currently call home.

I'd never used this water fountain before because its inside a washroom building at a track & field park. I gave it a try tonight because its in a convenient location near a fork in the MUP and the direction was going has no fountains (while the other way has 8).

The building has electric swing doors on both ends so you can roll right through (sliding would have been better). This fountain is way better than all the other ones in the park. Put your bottle on the platform and it fill automatically. It also fills 5x faster. All the other ones take about a minute to fill a bottle and you have to hold a button the entire time.

I've been using that same Planet Bike 2W Blaze light since 2009. Its pretty much useless for illumination but makes a handy being seen light. If I had to guess I'd say its maybe 40 lumen.

Saddle down is not an issue as long as you put out wattage.

How you like those? I am thinking of getting the wahoo bolt v2 as my first bike computer because their displays seem to be well suited to daylight conditions. Garmin also has an image as the nerd choice in my head, while wahoo is more fashion-forward.

Garmin's are tolerated, not loved. Their developers are always breaking something every time a new firmware version is released. The units all have their quirks. I've stuck with Garmin because of the touch screen and ability to make your own maps with 3rd party opensource tools.

I immediately noticed the screen on the 1030 plus was washed out with poor contrast and color vibrancy. The 1030 plus was their previous flagship model, but the screen quality is much lower than the 830 which was released a few years before it. They could have put a screen as good as the 830s on it but for whatever reason they chose to just double the memory, eliminate the sd card slot and call it good. I've heard the 1030 screen is fine in direct sun its just the backlight that is garbage.

yesterday I did some gravelmeming. sun was weirdly brutal even at 9am. blew through all 2l of my water on a 10 mile climb. turned back early. had a filter but didn't want to risk it. descent was fun as hell. can't wait to do it again. here's a horse for your consideration.

Got my first high beam flash of the season running my helmet light on a unlit road on the edge of town. Those are fun because I just lift my head up and look directly at the vehicle to let them see what 1200 lumens looks like when its not pointed at the road.

Maybe I should add a shroud to my helmet light like the one I have my bar light. With 3 LEDs it does spray a lot of light high.

Slapped together a shroud for my other light. Cutup Nalgene bottle and a bit of foil tape and electrical tape. Made it a little less ghetto than the one for my handlebar light.

Ordered a 2 x 21700 cell battery so I can stop stuffing a 6 cell battery in my jersey pocket. I've only had huge batteries for those lights since the original 4 cell battery died quite a few years ago and I got the second light without the stock battery. I don't need 10 hours of runtime for a helmet light.

also your numbers don't add up. 35km of climbing in 80mins would mean you're riding uphill at around 28km/h, which means either you're not actually climbing, or you should be winning the tour de france.
