How do you even "get into" trains? I've been playing Train Sim World 2 and have been enjoying driving the GP38-2 around, but I don't see how this kind of enjoyment could happen in a real life setting if you aren't the one driving the train. I do think trains are cool, but I feel like they are too loud to enjoy in real life. Am I missing something here? Please enlighten me trainbros.

I already have the 'tism, I'm just having trouble understanding the real life appeal as opposed to the simulator appeal (which I do understand).

Yes, I play Microsoft Flight Simulator with a joystick and most of my male family members are aviators in real life. I enjoy flying in real life and in simulators, but I don't really play flight simulators that much because I feel I have enough aviation in my life when I go flying with my other family members IRL.

I am enjoying Train Sim World 2 though, I just want to know what the easiest way to "get into" trains IRL is without going off of the 'tism deep end.

What's the secret anon?

You're either born with it or you're not. I've never met a railfan who didn't feel the same way. Of course that doesn't mean it can't happen, but I have no idea how to like trains if you don't already.

Personally I prefer to get into them by paying for a ticket, waiting for one to arrive at the station platform, and then embarking, or "getting in" when the doors open

Combination of nature and nurture. In my experience the average foamer inherits the 'tism from his/her/their father and is then raised to appreciate trains by the same father. Insufficient data exists to adjust for foamers removed from their birth parents at birth so some of this is speculation. As a side note, there are no afab foamers. Mtf foamers are real. I have no comment on nb foamers.

do you have the kind of brain that releases happy chemicals while playing Sim City, or when looking at those books they had in the library with pictures of castles and ships and stuff that had parts cut away so you could see inside? what's the closest place where you could take a train? - where could you go, and how long would it take? what would the journey be like? has it always been like that?

I may have the "plane genes", but I'll probably never own my own plane to fly, so the experience of flying for me is rare. I can ride or go look at trains more often though, seems like the better (and more cost effective) mode of transportation to be an enthusiast for in my opinion.

(Here's me in a T-34 before takeoff 2 years ago)

Its a way of life i think. My great grand dad, my grand dad, and my dad were engineers and now im an engineer. I grew up around trains. I remember my grand dad taking me to the yard he used to work out of when i was a kid and watching them switch. I remember my dad taking me to ride the train he ran when i was a kid. I grew up in the industry. I used to sit and listen to my grand dad and his brothers who were all railroaders tell stories about when they were working. I remember getting my first train set for christmas. My grand dad got it for me and my uncle zeke and my uncle ed got me a whole bunch of extra track and freight cars. They all helped me set it up on my grandmothers living room floor and taught me how to switch a yard, how to build a train, how to switch a customer, all that. I was like 5 or 6 maybe. I dont know anything other than trains
