The problem isn't Boring Company cutting corners. The problem is staring right in front of your face. They $450 million dollar pay out to some third party office management that does not do any of the build out. Its not even a matter of regulation at this point, the payment of $450 is obscene and it feels like its only given away just so they can justify that the Boring Project would fail, and so the ideologues can parade it as a failure. Or its a way to leash the company down so the project gets delayed indefinitely to something which the Boring Company has no control over or insight into.

This is dirty politics, if ever there was anything. An obscene, apparent and blatant display of dirty politics.

There's no way that planning alone balloons the construction cost to $450m. This is what the government decided the cost should be paid to a third party overseer. Overseer who doesn't contribute to anything except to slowdown/shutdown/get in the way of the actual builders. Read the article. Its what the regulators wanted to tack on.

Because they built a tunnel that's small in diameter, with no switches whatsoever. This is a tram/metro tunnel, not a highway tunnel. It costs more because not only does the diameter need to be wide enough for trains to fit, but you also need to tunnel your way up to the metro yard where these trains will be stored, along with adding turnouts. That alone is going to eat up your costs due to complexity. That 60 million was lie, and you believed it. It's not my fault that you're in denial.

You're confusing yourself. Boring Company is the one that proposed the idea. They proposed the design. They proposed the passenger carrying capacity that meets the requirements. Safety will be overseen by Boring Company and other safety agencies.

The $450 million dollar is just another third party oversight for the project, on top of what the Boring Company already does to maintain/build/oversee the safety systems/etc.

You're trying to argue some nonsense point. Tunnels in Vegas are all rated for safety by local fire/safety department and transit regulations. The same structure is proposed for this project.

This isn't about safety, it isn't about infrastructure, it isn't about cost. Its about an additional third party that is paid $450 million dollar on top of the $50M proposed tunnel that meets all safeties/design considerations.

Where does it say that? I'm looking at the article and what I'm reading is that the project overall is now expected to cost 450 million (because surprise, building a metro line consists of more than drilling a tunnel), and that Boring were unable to make a satisfying proposal because they can only drill undersized, unsafe tunnels for cars which so far only Las Vegas was dumb enough to be duped into buying. The two things don't seem to be connected.

I'm basing that off final costs of previous light rail projects. Light rail and tram tracks are going to run at least $100 million per mile in the US, with very few exceptions being less expensive. Portland's Orange Line ended up being about $200 million per mile.

Right of way issue important. If you build over land, you're basically impeding on on going traffic, land power lines/property owners, underground utilities/sewers/etc. Then you have to continue to maintain the road thats being exposed to heavy train, as well as all the different weather and environmental conditions.

By digging a deep tunnel, you bypass all the issues on top. No more right of way issues, no more environmental degradations, no more natural disaster issues, very minimal maintenance, very minimal cost to upgrade the vehicle for capacity/speed, etc

Pretty much any large public project is going to hemorrhage money because of the usual corruption, waste, ineptitude, and bloat that comes with them. On top of that big contractors know how to underbid and get way more money out of it later. That was another reason why the TBC project was so cheap in Vegas, since they funded it themselves the local and state governments didn't attach a bunch of strings to the entire thing. Doing business is California is much different though, it's no secret that it costs more to do business there than other parts of the country.

The boring machine tunnels are almost fully automated now, so it doesn't cost much to dig at either 12 feet diameter or 24 feet diameter. Boring Company has both proposal.

The major cost factory is not the tunnel but rather the exit build out. Vegas project manager told in some interview few days ago. Its because the exit nodes are much more complex and labor intensive.

Again, the tunneling machine is fully automated. So the cost to dig tunnel is just electricity that powers the tunnel digging machine and electricity to remove the dirts. The outershell and structural laying of the concretes are fully automated as well.

The exit nodes require lot of labor depending on the type of exit nodes. If you build an underground exit nodes, then you need lot of labor to build elevators, cooling systems, safety systems to handle underground, etc,

That's untrue. People are required to operate and oversee the TBM as well as troubleshoot it if problems arise.

I doubt there's any local condition that makes the entrance and exit more expensive than the tunnel itself. I could be wrong, but I want to see more evidence that's the case.

It's a bad idea to use their Boring tech to bore tunnels for cars, I don't know how much more efficient they claim their drills are but if it's better than conventional means then they would better utilize it for building subway tunnels. Just saying, it'll be better for humanity than stupid cager tunnels
