Just to make sure you understand, the lowest gearing (lowest as in easiest to climb hills) would be using the smallest chainring in the front and the largest in the back. With that out of the way yes you can put a 3x on the front, or you could find a freewheel/cassette with a larger low gear, or do both, but for an older road bike it might not be worth the money. I'd sell the road bike and find a nice old reliable rigid steel frame 80s-90s mtb. Virtually all of them already have 3x front chainrings and a 30 or 32 tooth as the lowest gear on the rear. Their lowest gearing is usually something like 28t in the front and 30-32t on the back, which is overkill unless you are the fattest fuck. 80s-90s mtbs are cheap af and extremely reliable and versatile with much better out of the box climbing ability with their gearing.

deore dx group off a mtb, replacing shimano 600 arabesque, still with the 600 shifters. Works good. 22x28 low gear.

Originally 'mtb' groupsets were made for touring bikes. Shimano called the first Deore a 'touring ensemble' not a groupset.
Speccing mtb drivetrains on touring bikes persisted through to the 9spd era.

Triple is the way to go if you like flicking between 1t gaps at the top end.

you don't even need that unless you care about being "period correct". present day Sora officially takes up to 34t and will take 36t no problem. personally I run 32 because 36 is half way to pie plate land

True. Those are great ratios. I really wish 10 speed+ large cassettes still offered 12 as a small cog. I'm too weak for 50/11 to be of much use. I'd rather top out at 50/12 and have tighter intervals.

Yes. And it would be fairly easy with a 3 piece crank and a square taper bottom bracket. You'd need to swap out both cranks though so they match. Some cranks have that slight bend to kick out further from the frame.

You'll likely need either a 170mm crankset or maybe 175mm. Measure from the center of the crank bolt to the center of the pedal bolt hole. Also you'll need a triple derailleur and a handlebar shifter to match.

At this point you might be thinking thats as much money as a used hybrid that already has a triple chainring off Craiglist and you're right.

Unless you wanna shop for used parts. Up to you.

*a triple also works but possiblity of needing a new front derailleur to cover the bigger spread, but maybe not.

slight possibility you can just bolt smaller chainrings to your existing crank but most cranks come with the smallest rings that fit its bolt circle as factory stock. check first, but you probably need a whole new crank with a smaller bolt circle.

It actually speeds them up, though below 40kph it's so small that they'll barely notice.
If you're close enough you'll extend the low pressure zone behind them and prevent them from being slowed down by the pressure difference.

I ride this route every night on the way home takes me around 25 minutes though. I think the steepest grade is like 8% and I can only go up it around 6 mph despite doing it for years. Maybe if I stopped being completely emaciated.

The safety concern is slightly valid but you do have multiple other safety risks from other road users anyway it's kind of part of being on the road. Persevere. When you think you're done, you still have 50% left in the tank. Go into robot mode and tune out from the pain. That's how your body adapts. It hates anything out of its comfort zone. It screams at you to stop trying to make it change. Don't submit to your body, make it submit to you.

I now fly up hills that used to cause me to slowly grind or even dismount.

The only people I've personally met (limited sample size, admittedly) who had to walk their bicycle up a 5% grade/slope were woefully flabby and out of shape.

Is it your bicycle? Or is it you? If the lowest gear is 65 gear inches or below, then it's you. A 5% grade in 65 gear inches is a bit of a workout but not hard. A 5% grade in 50 gear inches is quite easy even for someone out of shape with limited bicycling experience.

I hate this mindset. Let's say an area is absolutely full of hills each with a grade/slope near 5%. There are no flats. You want to travel 10 miles. Well, if you walk at an average speed of 4mph it will take you 2.5 hours. If you bicycle it, and walk your bicycle up every single hill at 4mph, then mount your bicycle and ride down at 15mph, it will take you 1 hour 35 minutes. This is still vastly preferable to walking. You're reducing travel time by almost 40%. Did I do my math right? I would prefer walking my bicycle up every single hill to simply walking.

If you do this you will change your chainline but at your level this won't matter much (going small chainring large sprocket 90% of times)
As anons have pointed out compatibilility is a big issue, especially trying to fit modern gear ratios on antique bikes (dropout spacing being the biggest issue).
