ITT: New transit projects you're excited for.
Pic rel is a new bridge being built, it'll remove necessity for a stop light at the intersection and let more traffic flow through nonstop. It'll make my commute much quicker to work once it's complete.

A street between downtown Salt Lake City and the University of Utah is getting rebuilt as a "transit priority street," pic related. The idea is to to have frequent and comfortable buses running in dedicated lanes to encourage nightlife and shopping without requiring cars.

This could end up creating a fun corridor with small shops, apartments, and affordable restaurants geared at young people, or it could prove to be another one of the city's retarded attempts to be just like heckin' Manhattanerino by removing a driving lane and replacing it with something utterly useless, then feigning surprise when all the local businesses close because only homeless "people" use that street now. It all depends whether they cheap out and use a regular city bus or buy something people with jobs would willingly ride.

Induced demand isn't good or bad, it just is what it is. If you build more convenient public transport, more people will use it. If you build more and faster roads, more people will use them. If you build more bike lanes, people will use them. With that you can follow various development concepts, like expanding public transit to avoid intense traffic, or more roads to favor car usage. But the same can be true for poorly planned public transit, where you offer new services that can't cope with demand. This is a classic issue with BRTs, which are reasonably attractive for riders because of fast, frequent and reliable service, and favored by planners because of fast and cheap implementation, but will often be unable to handle the high demand they induce, unlike LRTs which are more scaleable in capacity.

The Utah State Legislature is also making some noises about extending our sole commuter rail line a few stops south and double-tracking parts of it to increase frequency. First, that's not how research works, because public transit in no situation to date is a panacea to congestion and commute times.
Secondly, the paper in which Wired cites for induced demand and the YouTube videos are subsequently based after, directly concludes that public transit doesn't affect their numbers significantly.

Businesses often will locate on high-traffic corridors and buy demographic data and details traffic numbers. The way you're suggesting it sounds like you could create your own economy just by building freeways, which is unfortunately not how it works in real life.

I just want my city's light rail to return to pre-covid timetables. the stop closest to me lost one of it's only two service lines, plus service ends at 11PM instead of 2AM now. if I stay out later I have to eat a $70 uber back home instead of a $2.50 train fare

The town I grew up finally got funding to finish the study for a rapid transit project intended on connecting the county to the Metro. It's been about a decade but the project finally has political support to move to the next stage of the process. Ideally, this project would eventually get extended and connect with the Purple Line, so all the Maryland Beltway jurisdictions and Southern Maryland are connected by rail. This won't be built for years but it's at least moving forward after being stagnant for so long.

Contributing factors are that transit-oriented places necessarily have high populations/population densities, driving congestion. They also have vast commute sheds (even past 100 km) which contribute to the commute time numbers.

It's currently set to open in 2025 with a new frequent bus network, but the actual separated lanes have been delayed, so the first phase won't be as good out of the box as I had hoped for.
And there is some of retardation in the planning, such as an insistence on "clean" energy vehicles, that will probably be battery busses.

In a similar vein, the "Mitte-Deutschland-Verbindung" the Central German Connection, will finally be fully electrified in it's Thuringian section. It goes from the Rhine almost all the way to the Polish border, but right now only diesel trains can run on the section from Weimar to Goessnitz. With electrification, Jena, Gera and Chemnitz (combined population of about 400k) might finally get a regular connection to the intercity network again. They seem to have scraped together the funds now, so it's coming "soon"™.

Circled in red. It seems it was a spur that connected to the mainline to the north to service a business to the south. Usually, spurs like this are either re-connected to a different line or the highway is built so it does not cross over ramps so awkwardly like it does.

I don't think it was built early enough to be a streetcar connection, but there were streetcars lines in that part of the city, and perhaps there was some overlap in time where the interstates were building built and the streetcars were still running, but I don't know the dates or history. If it was for normal trains it was definitely a spur line into that little part of town... it's way too high up to connect to the KCS and UP mainlines below it, and there were a number of street-running branches throughout KC and other cities years ago. It's pretty steep but that was possible when you were just going in and out with a locomotive and a few cars at a time. Weird setup though, definitely a compromise situation

Not a streetcar, and connected with the line to the north. There are still some remnants (crossings embedded in the road), moreso with Street View. It looks like there was a warehouse at 7th and May the railroad connected to (since reconfigured to remove the loading dock sunken below grade). It must have pretty important to cross over highway ramps like that. That is SUPER rare.

I'm not sure where the "steep" comes into play, the ramp descends to the expressway below grade but the railroad grade is even. I don't know when it was abandoned, as the crossing style looks fairly modern--usually these things are made of wood like the old crossings to the north, unless they had a particular state of the art material for the on-ramp. It may have been active into the 1990s, but I can't see any road drawings to indicate a stop or a railroad crossing ahead.

It would've made sense to do that but the Purple Line had to fight tooth and nail just to get light rail through Chevy Chase. They would've unleashed hell at the thought of running heavy rail through their shitty golf courses.
Either way, I'm just happy the Purple Line will be connecting Metro stations with some of the busiest corridors within the Beltway. It makes little sense for someone going from College Park to Silver Spring to have to go into DC and transfer at Fort Totten just to go somewhere that's 20 minutes west by car.

There isn't enough parking and what parking they have is too expensive. Buses are also too expensive, you're forced into getting a day ticket rather a return because they're the same fucking price for some reason. Other than that it's good.

They're building a new tram route across a bay. Some people are very salty that the bridges won't have any car lanes, and it's comparatively pretty expensive. They're also building a 25km light rail route for ~400 million, and this thing will be nearly the same price even though it's only 10km of new tracks. But it should be a pretty cool route with some nice views in the end

Progress on the longest bridge. Some people also feel it's a bit overkill since it's just a tram/light rail. This one is 1,2km long, it's like 155 million just for the bridges so it makes this project more expensive than tram lines usually are

looks really cool, I'd definitely go to that city just for that if I was visiting finland, it looks like there is a residential/industrial complex/neighborhood on the other side? seems like a great use for a short range tram, and obviously across water it's gonna be more expensive

The western side used to be a harbor which they've been building into a residential area for the past decade. The eastern side also used to have an oil harbor but it's similarly being built into a new residential area, and then there's an old suburb further in on the island

Currently you have to take a bus to the subway to get into the city, which creates this unnecessary loop around the bay and an extra switch between the bus and the train. The bridges essentially cut the travel distance and time in half so it just makes good sense I think. Plus they're building another new route toward the north, which will also connect to the eastern area, so it just generally improves connections. Took them long enough to actually start building this though, the winning bridge design was chosen in like 2013 but they only started building them this year

From the looks of it, Helsinki has a greater population than a city like Baltimore but less population than a city like DC. Not terrible for Finland but that's small compared to a lot of European and American major cities.

It's the same with the brt system in Reykjavík. There will be a bridge with pedestrian, cycle and bus lanes, and some people are furious about the lack of car lanes

In our current work environment demand is much lower as most people are still working a hybrid/at home schedule. Relieving an existing chokepoint is probably worth inducing some demand.

The Helsinki area is like 1,3 million but that's including the four different municipalities. But yeah it's on the smaller side. The Helsinki municipality by itself is 650k or whatever it is now. It's a similar situation in Stockholm or Copenhagen, although their municipalities are much smaller and more numerous. I think as a result they have better teamwork across the city when it comes to zoning and stuff. The ones in Helsinki are so large that they have more pull and don't always really operate as an unit with the other ones. Like it took 30 years to expand the metro westward, because the municipality west of Helsinki didn't want it. So it used to just end near the centre, and the western leg only started operating in 2016
