>>1829652i drive a mini truck so i get less mpg than an eco car, i live in cali so gas prices are higher. but i also commute only half the week so ~$365 on gas.
....i would also argue that someone who commutes any significant amount via bicycle will be consuming more food as well.... especially if youre commuting an american distance to work.... though you would pay more gas if you commute an american distance to work
my truck has a bicycle in the back so i can always pedal the last 1/2mi and not pay for parking , so thats -$4,620 on parking. i also hacked my own free gate clicker for my apartment complex
i do my own maintaince so we can cut that $400 a month down to $100 (ill charge myself $20/hr for labor instead of shoprate $100/hr)
insurance on little shit truck with 1 ticket in past three years is $600/yr
depreciation: my truck has already hit the rockbottom value of $1000 many years ago... inf act due to car shortage anomoly, it has gone up in value.
total cost $1,065
thats cheaper than the bus
takes me places the bus wont take me
saves me 2/3 of travel time... (how long did each persons commute take???, how valuable is their time?)
though if you consider half the bus drivers dont make me pay and skip fare on the train half the time, my public transit fee would be ~$600
and then when you consider my commute is 35miles over a mountainrange each day.
car drive is 45 minutes each way. bicycle + public transit is 1hr 45min... if i commute via public transit, i spend an extra 20 hours a week commuting. at $30/hr it would cost me $600/mo worth of my time to bicycle+public transit.... also i dont know if i can sneak in/out of the transit station by my work, so that could potentionally add an extra $15 to every commute
