The only instinct you have is to protect your head with your hands. Tucking your chin, cupping your hands, dropping your arms, and rolling through making contact with your forearms, upper arms, upper back, lats, ass, thighs, and calves in that order is learned. I learned it by being a manlet in contact sports. My helmet only enhances it in case there's a rock or curb in my roll path.
Helmets are nothing compared to a thick neck and well drilled impact absorption technique, but they still weigh but a few grams and are the last line of defense against the odd impact with a hard and pointy.
