Not on downtubes, they are retarded and phased out for a reason. Get barend ones if you insist but after indexed shifting there's not much point to them.

Downtube shifters are worth trying.
I prefer indexed downtube shifters (still front friction) but a good friction setup is fine.

Full friction can be worth doing to facilitate some esoteric or very cheap setup in the short-ish term.

It does take a while to get used to. There's also something to be said for a setup which encourages you to shift less.

Friction shifting is awesome. I can't think of a situation where indexed is better.
Then again, if 30 years of cycling haven't convinced me of "the benefits of indexed", I doubt some anonymous post will.

It just means a friction shifter for the front derailer, and an indexed shifter for the rear derailer. It was a very common setup, back in the day.
With the front, it's usually "one or the other", and it's helpful to be able to slightly adjust the positioning ("trim" the front derailer). With the rear, most people want discrete settings, with no possible in-between options.

From the 7 speed era on oldschool shifters (dt, bar end, thumbie), the right shifter for the rear derailer is indexed
the left shifter for the front derailer remained friction.

7/8/9 speed rear shifters can also be toggled between indexed and friction mode. This feature was dropped on some last gen 10/11 speed shifters, although it can be hacked back.

IMHO I like friction shifting on road bikes with 8 or fewer speeds on the cassette/freewheel. But indexing makes sense as gaps get smaller, or if you want the advantages of STI/Ergo shift lever placement on your handlebars, or on any bike that's going to see rough surfaces since have push button shifting is especially convenient in that situation.

No. There is literally no benefit to them. Some people claim better maintenance or something but they in reality no quality indexed shifter has failed in years. Indexed shifter have been better ergonomics, are reliable, shift quickly in any conditions. If you are some super unracer slo-mo kind of person maybe the benefits of indexed are overkill for you but you don't gain anything from going friction.

There is a maintenance and reliability advantage and it's not to do with shifters failing.

It's not a significant enough reason to not get indexing, which is great, but it's not nothing either. It's a nice benefit it just generally doesn't outweigh the disadvantages.

I had never had any maintenance or reliability issues even with old 1991 deore dx group. If you have a new cable that was not pre-stretched, all you need is a click of more tension and you're good to go. You don't need to fiddle with the indexing as the spacing obviously doesn't change. Just set the upper lower limit screws once and never touch again.

Cables don't really wear out there's barely any force on them and in the rare case that it does happen (new cable) you just tighten the tension by a click on your shifter as already mentioned. If you bend your derailleur you probably should bend it back or replace it. And friction shifters are not exactly for performance-oriented riding anyways as they take some precision to be accurately set which you can't really do in situations where you need all your strength and focus in maneuvering your bike. In other words, friction shifting is more of a leisure ride thing where it kind of works but there are also no risks that would lead to the situation that you need to ride with bent derailleurs that would mess up your indexing.

The housing wears out. The ends in the ferrule pull apart and start to rust. At that point systems won't be able to be indexed well.

As for the rest of your post, yes, but, you can do serious riding where you aren't shifting a lot. Bending a hanger can easily happen in any situation. You're basically spouting nonsense.

I'm not even trying to argue for friction it just doesn't have no advantages.

How is housing corrosion an argument against indexation? If something corrodes or gets bent or whatever you need to fix that but it's the same in friction or indexed. Don't say I'm spouting nonsense when your hypotheticals require forces majeures like car crashes to become relevant.

Anons who promote friction as unironically better than modern indexed/sti need to check into a facility.

Friction is acceptable if:
1. You want to ride period correct bike
2. You want to try it just for the novelty and fun
3. You got your bike for free and have no money to change it

Seriously if somebody tells me with a straight face that reaching down between your legs to go up a gear is the preferred method of doing that in a time when STI exists, they are either a troll or delusional.

Anytime you turn, or are out of the saddle to put down the power, or ride through rougher terrain or do anything that requires control of the bike, the downtube friction shifters are the worst possible choice.

The only argument that holds a bit of water is the ease of maintenance but realistically that's 10 minutes 2x a year on indexed.

I've installed several sets of these on friends' bikes. They're normal people, not enthusiasts, and they love having shifters there. People used to shit oni stem shifters back in the day, but they're quite practical. The only problem has been those black washers cracking occasionally.

Yes, it is a meme in the etymological sense. Lots of people do it for good reason. Riding out of the saddle is basically activating a turbo where you can get more power. Not something the unracer friction-shifting crowd would know anything about.

Downtube unindexed is ok if you just tour the Kazakh steppe and only change gears 2x a day. Not acceptable for any kind of city traffic or performance oriented riding.

In regards of Index vs Friction shifters it also depends on what you can get hold of. I haven’t tried Microshift or Dura Ace 9sp but Sunrace (in my experience) don’t index well. I’ve found no issues fiction shifting with Dia Compe ratchet frictions shifters at 9sp.

long pull v brakes are the best possible rim brakes for all applications. simplest set-up, strongest power, most durable, widest tire accommodation, least expensive.

Dura Ace 9 spd works very well and the finish is beautiful but it has heavier clicks than 7 spd shimano dts for some reason. So the action isn't quite as nice for the right one.
