It's going to depend on how much you ride, and if you have a washing machine at your place.
When I was younger and lived in an apartment, I had probably twice the amount of shorts I do now. Because I rode every day, and hated going to the laundromat.
You can wash them in the sink, or with you when you take a shower, but they take a long time to air dry, even if you wring them out in a towel. The chamois takes a long time to dry. Kind of a pain in the ass to do it that way.
With the one pair of bibs I bought, after a while I sold them to a friend for cheap. They were pretty much new, it didn't make sense to just toss them out.
