I guess the range is always good if you live in the alps or something. there are always inclines where you'll just have a bad cadence without appropriate gearing.

105di2 is 2000km+ per charge. You probably change your cables more than that. Of course the down side is that it will just stop working completely rather than degrade slowly. But still, shouldn't be hard to just charge them 2-3 times per year. And that's assuming 100km per week.

They are also going to be lighter than mechanical cables and we already have internal routing for everything, you wouldn't even see them.

I just checked, they say MORE GEAR RANGE because this 105 di2 group now has a 12 speed cassete, compared to the previous 11 speed.

This 12 speed cassete is a 11-36 teeth though, the same as always, so more range my ass. Now the chain is extra thin, enjoy that faster wear on the chain bros ;) you will sure win some world tournaments by having that extra speed.

I have 3 bikes, assembled by myself with different parts from different sources.
11-36 cassetes can even be found on 9 speeds configurations, they are not new. This is a novelty only if you don't ever leave from Shimano's strict ecosystem of parts.

Compact cranks are fantastic.
It's a costly luxury and anyone can ride road on 9 speed and kill it but I was onboard with having more gears to have wider range and maintain tight gaps. 11 speed is enough.

Shimano kinda pioneered that concept. The whole groupset idea.
Before Shimano got a real foothold in the 80s most high end bikes were frankenbikes.

Compatibility is appreciated but it's really an incredibly niche group of people who even cared that you couldn't index mtb derailers with road shifters or put time trial bar end shifters in friction mode in the 10 speed era.
It rarely ever makes sense to upgrade or modify the groupset on a good stock road bike.

It annoys me too but you can't blame them it's not stupid

Tell me you've never been to any big climb without telling me. They're literally full of amateurs to the point it can be annoying on busy days.

Also it doesn't matter if the climb is 1 km or 10 km, if your gearing isn't low enough you'd be better off with a bigger cassette. There are plenty of places that have a lot of relatively short but really steep climbs.

_IF_ they kept price parity with old 105 ( ok +10% for that Di2 stuff ) then it would be pretty good - a well rounded OEM product for the masses. But they didn't and the price hike makes it useless.

It’s easy to get a race bike for well under $5k. It’s not going to be aero, have electric shifting, or disk brakes though. That’s what you’re paying more for.

You can easily set endurance bikes up with 10cm+ bar drop, atleast if you're tall.

Maybe a current era one which is basically a gravel bike and fits 38mm tires would be retarded but a rim endurance bike isn't like that. I don't see what the issue would be.

I looked at a Canyon Ultimate CF SL vs Endurace CF SL geometry just now and unless I'm doing my math wrong it's about an 8 degree difference just going by stack and reach, at least for a medium frame. So you hand picked the raciest endurance bike on the market. Most endurance bikes have 25 - 40 mm more stack and 10 - 20 mm less reach than the "race" geometry. Both become a problem for setting up racy fit with lots of drop. If you already need a long stem on the race geo you'd need an even longer stem on the endurance bike. And going above 120 mm really limits your choices. And you'll also need at least -17 degree stem, most of the time even that isn't enough to get the same fit compared to -7 -to -12 degree range usually found on race bikes. Have you measured the elongation on those chains and the km ridden and came to your conclusion that way? Did you control for all the variables? I don't really think that's possible to do as a bike shop mechanic. The best data I've seen on this is pic related (from this article: https://cyclingtips.com/2019/12/the-best-bicycle-chain-durability-and-efficiency-tested/#8-9-10-11-12-speed), which controls for all the variables and shows newer chains lasting longer.

The only thing that has really changes is the length of the rollers, the plates have similar thickness.
The rollers being shorter makes them stiffer as well, flexing less and putting less strain in the pins

So first of all the elongation is typically less caused by stretching of the plates but of the pins developing play over time. I think a thinner more flexible chain has less stress on those pins causing less wear and less chances of dust getting in there, rubbing. The pins have the same strength as in wider chains but are actually stiffer as the pin is shorter and therefore the pin is "bent" less. I'm not an engineer so do correct me if you understand this better.
