They've had 40 years to perfect western standards of steelwork. The half of our finished steel production was gone by the 70s.

Plus Taiwan were the non-communists. USA invested heavily in Taiwan as did American-Chinese expats who fled.

I have lived in Taiwan for like six years. One of the things that I really enjoy is riding through the industrial parts of town and seeing all of the independent small to medium sized factories. Growing up in the Rust Belt, I thought that I knew what it was like to be from a manufacturing area, but Taiwan really showed me that there is basically no manufacturing in the USA, at all. Even in my rusty city back home, nowadays most people are just service industry slobs.

The cost of doing business is also really cheap in Taiwan since the cost of labor is really low. Taiwan is just a great place for manufacturing.

While Taiwan makes all modern chips they are making them in german made fabs. The only difference will be a couple years while the germs build the fabs in US territory and bob is your mums brother.

They don't recognise the ROC, at least not explicitly. "Taiwan province is part of China" is only a true statement if you consider the ROC to be China.

This is untrue. For one thing, I have a friend who loves the trivia fact that Rome is the only city with an embassy for both China and Taiwan. Rome recognises China, so it has a Chinese embassy, but Rome also contains Vatican City which recognises Taiwan and has a Taiwanese embassy.
