>>1835387>>1835402technically, if you are the kind of person who cycles long distances on a regular basis, stainless steel spokes will fatigue over time. Almost every new spoke you can find is stainless instead of carbon steel for various other reasons, but because of this you do have a limited life due to fatigue cycles that carbon steel doesnt suffer from as much. This is only after a lot of riding, to be fair. People who talk about rims wearing out or spokes braking from fatigue as these big problems clearly have never ridden enough to actually encounter them. Most broken spokes come from badly build wheels and most rim braking issues come from the wheel being out of true or the brakes being set up poorly and used poorly.
>>1835220this is the most monkey brain logic. If you are trying to make a light, efficient vehicle, any thing that you can get more use out of is good. A rim that doubles as a large surface area brake is a very good design choice.
The only real argument for disc brakes is better performance in wet conditions. Even when it comes to carbon rims. The weight of a disc brake system is not worth it for anything except the better performance in the wet.
To someone who cycles enough to wear through the rims of a wheel, the cost of a new rim vs the cost of a new rotor is meaningless, you've already got tens of thousands of km's out of the part.
