the bead of your tire sits against the hook of the rim. The well of the rim has a smaller circumference, so if you move the bead into the well, you create slack.

It doesn't want to stay there so you have to keep doing it. Just move around the wheel pushing it in bit by bit with your thumbs, and you'll find a bit more slack. Repeat until the tire is on.

Some tire and rim combinations are tighter than others making the tire more difficult to mount. Use soap and water on the bead before trying to install a tire. Thank me later.

Depends on the tire / rim. Tubeless tires are extra tight. Cheapo tires with thick rubber can be nasty too.

I'll agree with this generally but tire levers are a nice backup to have.

Also though I'd say even if you are really good at it sometimes you'll set the tire like shit and pinch flat yourself it just happens

If you pinch the tube with a tire lever, your technique sucks to be honest. While I can usually quickly mount and dismount even notoriously hard rim/tire combinations by hand, I will occasionally use tire levers when my hands are shot from Judo/climbing, when I am short on time or whatever other reason. Haven't pinched a tube in well over a year, and I have probably changed a thousand in that timespan.

What size tires are you guys talking about in this thread? I have very limited experience with changing tubes, but mountain bike tires seem really easy to work on, and my 700x32 Continental Grand Prix 4 Season tires weren't too hard to deal with either, did use tire levers, but I never got frustrated.

Are you guys talking smaller tires? 700x25 / 700 x 28 etc? Are those substantially harder?
