Abominations of transportation

Starting with the metal death trap MV22 Osprey. Every one of these I've flown in has had some sort of engine malfunction/failure midair or stalled on VTOL.

Don't forget that in full plane mode the propeller will strike the ground upon landing.

I used to love these when they first came out, they seemed like a "best of both worlds" vehicle, but their track record is terrible.

Also, jesus christ, can't autorotate OR glide? Why in the fuck didn't they design it to do one or the other?

It's actually not that bad, they had a lot of trouble in the early testing days but since they went into normal service they've been about on part with regular helicopters, actually better than a lot of them. Afaik none of the serious accidents would've been prevented if it could autorotate, either, but it's still shitty not being able to do it and it seems like second gen tiltrotors will all have that capability. (The V280 and civilian AW609 do, at least.)

Goodyear Inflatoplane.

Conceived as an aviation inflatable raft of sorts, was meant to be a droppable escape plane to escape from behind enemy lines. Insanely cool that it ever flew/worked, but on a test flight the controls failed and a wing got sliced by the propeller and that was that.

In production, no. However there were quite a few experimental/prototype models built even a few decades before the Osprey entered regular service.
