How does a stolen bike look like lol. When I see students ride wrong size frames I just think they're clueless and broke.

Usually what I do is stop the thief and take away the bike. Then I take the bike home, melt it down and recast the metal into the shape of a samurai sword, sharpen it, conduct a ceremony to dedicate the blade to justice, then find the thief again and cut off his head. It's a lot of work, but worth it.

real answer, nothing, police doesn't care, best case scenario for the owner is stealing it back, opening himself up to liability.
better world answer, call the cops or owner.
most ""small"" crimes need better enforcement or greater punishments, thats the only way to stop both small and great crimes

I'm considering getting one of these gps tracking tags for my e-bike. If it got stolen I would know where it got taken. At least until they discover the tag.
The cops aren't going to track down a stolen bike, but if you hand them the gps coordinates then they'll probably check it out.

How can I tell if the bike I bought is stolen?

It bought it for 50 euro off some Moroccan man that claimed he bought it but that he must move now so he's selling it for pocket money.

I checked it and it has no serial number nowhere.

It needs service and I wouldn't like bring it to the LBS and be called thief

Usually what reddit means by a "stolen bike" is a bike that was mid to high end at any point in the last 35 years, used by someone who looks unathletic, dressed in a way that reddit doesn't approve of, having skin that reddit doesn't approve of, or just happens to be in op's line of sight within 30 minutes of op skimming the crime section of the New York Post or opening the Citizen app

well, if you contact the cops, they can check against any theft reports, then you can take it to get fixed .you won't get arrested if the shop IDs it as stolen. but if it is stolen the cops will take it and return it. but you should want to return it anyway especially if you bought it for pocket money

Buying stolen goods is a felony. Not being aware of the goody's provenance is buyer's fault, hence punishable.

there's two kinds.
one is official, your city licences it just like a car and you get a little plate. fell out of fashion many years ago so it's not common anymore.

the other is unofficial. some rando company puts your bike in a database and you just sort of hope that your local pawn and bike shops pay attention to it.
usually there's little kits you can buy at the bike shop.

To give an honest answer, if I suspected a bike to be stolen just because the person looks suspicious then I probably wouldn't do shit because it's not worth my time or worth getting stabbed over. If I knew it was stolen I might confront the person or ideally follow them for a bit and lock it up if they stop somewhere.
