When walking down the antiquated North/Clybourn station house to take the subway to either Grand Ave. or Belmont/Fullerton for Ravenswood/Brown Line transfers became a regular part of my life
Could not get enough of riding around in the El and building stuff out of wooden tracks/railcars at home for the rest of my childhood after that
My favorite railcar is the 2200 series

I live close to a large railway line, watching the trains fly by in 130+km/h was always a pretty jaw-dropping experience
Also learning the "secrets" like signalling etc was cool as a kid

Three core memories stand out for me:
Crushing pennies on the tracks, counting the cars on the freight trains and looking for loose spikes on the tracks with my brothers when I was very young.

Got a few of grandpa's model trains when he passed, I was 11.

Finally when I turned 18 I left my little home town and moved to a city that had a light rail system that I used daily for years.

My dad works with pantograph, so i got to sit inside engines and also watch them get assembled at his office when I was a kid.

I was like 5 or 6 i think. Picrel was me getting my first train set. My grand dad was an engineer for the Western Maryland, his brothers, my Uncle Zeke and my Uncle Ed were engineers on the C&O and the B&O. They all bought me that train set, a shit ton of track and a some more freight cars. We built a little railroad on my grandparents living room floor and they were teaching me how to build trains, switch customers and switch a yard, how to railroad. I just wanted to run my new train. But i remember my grand dad telling me stories about when he was working and i thought it was the coolest shit ever. Me and him were always out watching trains, going to museums or train shows. My grand dad was a railroad man through and through. Ever since i was a little kid, I loved the trains. Its cool to me how im doing the same job he did all those years ago.
