what kind of bike should i get if i really hate any kind of maintenance? i've been lead to believe that shaft and belt drives are almost maintenance free as far as the drive train is concerned but is there something i'm missing?

None, all bikes require maintenance. The kind you'll hate the most (putting air in the tubes, fixing flats) is universal to all bikes. You're also probably allergic to spending more than a couple hundred bucks so the closest thing to a "bombproof" utility bike, like a belt drive IGH bike with big apples, is going to be more than you'll want to spend.

What you should instead be looking for is a bike where the necessary maintenance tasks are palatable from your point of view. First of all get it out of your head that you can get away with a "no maintenance" setup, that's like a phone that doesn't require charging, or clothes that don't require washing. What you want is an easy to use, easy to adjust bike. Like how you can slap a Di2 RD on a bike and set the limit screws and then the electronics handle the rest. Arguably it's "more complicated" and yet, it's less work.

Yeah, having an obscure novelty drivetrain is going to result in an unfixable bike if the slightest thing goes wrong. This is why people buy stuff that they aren't 100% in love with, because knowing you can just wheel it into a shop and have it fixed for sure is more important than some autistic engineering talking point you saw on youtube.

why are you projecting? pumping air and fixing flats don't count as maintenance. i'm just sick and tired of chains and needing to constantly clean and relube them and still getting tons of friction because i dont have the skills and tools needed to adjust them or whatever needs to be done.

I had a Priority Apollo. Literally requires no maintenance ever outside of fixing flats or tuning the brakes a little sometimes. This bike got stolen. I think because belt driven bikes look so interesting they are more of a target for thieves.

If you want my honest opinion anon, chains don't actually require that much more maintenance, and everything you want to do on a bike is dead-shit simple outside of respoking a wheel or something. Just get any bike that you like.

Budget? Hills or flat?

Low budget:
Single speed

Mid budget:
Shimano nexus hub, or sturmey archer hub with chain, maybe a shimano alfine 8spd (more reliable than 11spd) with a single speed chain. 8spd can take transmission oil instead of grease for longevity.

High budget:
gearbox with belt drive such as rohloff speed hub, or mid-drives such as effigear, pinion etc.

Chain maintenance: parrafin wax and ptfe powder means no road gunk. (Look up oz cycle 'ultimate chain wax' for steps)

Wheels: high spoke count 32 or 36 to reduce chance of wheel becoming untrue.

Tyres: look for puncture resistant touring tyres. You'll still have to pump them up occasionally.

Brakes: either v brakes or side pull with removal brake pads. Set up the position once, then slide out worn pads adjust tension and slide in new pads.

thank you all for the replies. i made OP when tired and should had specified some things.

I have ridden a bike as my main transport for my entire life and i'm so sick and tired of chains at this point that i'm willing to try another system even if they turn out to be memes.

I live in EU and have max budget of 1500€.
So far the only reasonable options I have found are

if anyone has anything to say for or against either brand or throw another suggestion available in EU i'd appreciate it.

Wax the chain. That's it. Just buy a brand new chain, raid Goodwill for depilation wax melter and chuck it in with some tea candles. Mix with chopsticks for 5 minutes, make sure every link moves while in the bath. Transport oil on the chain will rejoin the paraffin on its quest to recombine back into crude oil, but concnetration will be so low that you can reuse it for the next chain easily.

you forgot the part where this lasts 200km at best, waxtard. that's 2-3 times a week for anyone who actually rides their bicycle. and you have to break the chain every single time (try that on the modern chains with mushroom rivets lol, oh wait did you say Quick Link®™? the thing that's only designed to be un... linked(?) a few times? best stock up on those at 3-4[unit currency] a pop, rotflmao).

it's easier and no more expensive to just replace your chain every couple of months, and leave the stock lubricant well alone instead of dousing the fucking thing in brake cleaner to remove *checks notes* the best lubricant that's ever going to be on it.

That friction is probably imaginary. A chain usually doesn't require constant care to give decent performance. Look into getting narrower tires perhaps or just pumping them to a higher pressure to reduce rolling resistance.

if the belts/shafts suck so much please explain why exactly. i know shafts have slightly worse efficiency and both systems are limited to hub gears but those are sacrifices i'm willing to make if it means i don't need to deal with the chain anymore.

I do about 100 miles a week between all my bikes and haven't lubed a chain since Easter. I just wipe them down with a cloth. Sometimes I’ll run some water over a dusty chain at my apartments car wash station. Sometimes when they're really filthy I’ll use an old tooth brush and some tooth paste to make them shine again. Lubing is for when they’re already noisy.

theres no such thing as a maintanance free bike
if you dont wanna do it yourself just take your bike to a repair shop for a check up every year or something
if you plan to leave your bike sat around collecting dust at all do not get hydraulic brakes or shocks, in fact avoid disk brakes entirely as these thigs degrade when neglected and the repair guy will want to just overhaul the lot
if you wanna fully put off maintanance for a long time get an internal gear hub with a belt drive and drum or roller brakes and tubeless tyres
one day these will need maintanance or an overhaul too tho
a fixie is the absolute peak of 0 maintanance followed by a single spead, both also can be belt drive but you probably want gears and brakes unless you live somewhere extremely flat
the other option is to stop being a pussy and just learn to do stuff yourself, on bikes built to be maintained maintanance is easy and cheap
