Station design: terminus, or through station? I think termini are kind of shit. Just look at Man Picc., tacking on platform 13 and 14 like some ugly tumour.

If the station was built properly as a through station in the first place then there would be no need for unsightly awkward ones that it has now. Meaning I wouldn't be hating on something as it doesn't exist.

Terminal stations for regional trains with underground through stations for suburban/commuter trains are based.
We have a couple of those here in Germany (Leipzig, Munich, Frankfurt). Even better when there's also underground through service for HSR.

Those two platforms were originally run by a totally different train company. It was only much later that they were stuck together.
Horrible bottleneck too. Needs 4 through lines to cope with how much traffic they want to route that way.

I believe they're planning on rebuilding most of the station to accommodate the Manchester HS2 platforms and the new NPR platforms. Who knows, maybe they'll take the opportunity to rationalise the track layout and do away with the through platforms altogether.
