I believe the main advantage canals and rivers have over railroads and highways is that most of the waterways are already there. If you have to build most of the waterways as new canals, wouldn't it be easier to build new railroads?

we had a thread about the meme canal a few years ago on /n/

basically the best idea was dredge out everything from chicago up to like cut bank MT. the vast majority of this would just be making the missouri navigatible. then you cut an actual canal up into alberta and lock and dam your way to Lake Koocanusa, and from there you're on the other side of the divide and can just work your way to the snake and then the columbia.

it would cost trillions and trillions. utter environmental catastrophe on an unprecedented scale. economic benefit would be negligible, since the trains do this same route very efficiently anyways.

maybe it'll happen one day!

I suspect the upper Missouri would still freeze over for half the year, even if appropriately widened and dredged.

It carries a lot of silt (it's tributary, the Platte, was infamous for being too thick to drink and too thin to plow) so it's going to be annoying to keep open.
