Despite the fact that anon always disappoints me, what are those giant hubs for? Coaster brakes? Integrated gear hub?

Also aren't City bikes like that super heavy and slow as shit?

The large hubs can be for dynamos. In Europe it’s common to have it integrated into the wheel itself. It’s not like the US where dynamos of any kind are kind of a rare sight today or not that easy to buy. City bikes are fine and functional for a large variety of people on unchallenging routes. Visiting family in the Balkans (very car dominated, some truly psycho drivers) I’ve seen babushkas riding vintage MTBs to get around.

Most people don't care about some lost watts if the wheels spin reliably and the brakes brake when you need them to. Flat country/areas means who cares if a bike is heavy or not. Dont need carbon to go to the bakery down the street.

IGH has atleast a perceived lower level of maintenance. I think in the similar line of thought as to why people use single speed or fixed gear bikes as "low maintenance". Shifting is just like a regular derailleur. And when the IGH grenades itself you just get another cheap bike because they're a dime a dozen.

Maybe, but are there enough of those bikes that anyone one could chuck they're bike into a canal and go get a new similar bike from a bike shop that's 500m away. It doesn't matter if something is better if there's more 'friction' to using it or acquiring it. The omafiets are everywhere, cheap, reliable enough, and have everything a morning who is using it to roll from a to b needs. You can't apply a hobbyists level of analysis to why the decision is made.

No it's not. In fact, the shifting is one of the major appeals of an IGH. You don't have to be pedalling or even moving to shift. It's magic.

i've been to amsterdam for a couple days. it's genuine cycling hell. it's an impenetrable wall of cyclists all going at grandma pace despite having the flattest city in the world. nobody has any awareness whatsoever because they feel too safe, a little tumble never hurt anyone. everybody bikes, everyone has shit bikes that can't brake for shit and creak in a mass cacophony, nobody wears helmets, nobody even bothers to lock the bikes, the dutch guy i stayed with joked that nobody cares if their bike is stolen because they just take the next one on the rack.

Cycling in the Netherlands is great, you have to lock your bike tho. Outside large cities you can go as fast as you want, in the larger cities you have to overtake people to choose your own speed. It is not hard and most people are going quite fast.

I don't see your point, the intersection I posted was danish, the dutch separate the traffic much more, and in general the dutch bend the law much more than they do here in Danmark too.

Does your bike also spend it's entire life outside packed tightly next to other bikes where the derailleur is bound to take hits? No? I thought so. There's a reason IGHs and singlespeeds are so popular as cheap everyday bikes. You can leave them out and pack them like sardines with other bikes and it just works when you get to your bike again. With a derailleur in similar circumstances you'll bend the hanger multiple times a week.

I think OP fails to see that these bikes literally never get serviced for years.
They spend all-day outside, the chain gets ridden until it literally can not bend under the heavy rust. IGH never get serviced at all for the entire lifetime of the bike.
