Are there any good examples of redeveloping a former airport? There's railway lines transformed into bicycle paths or linear parks but I've never seen a former runway made into a central avenue of a district

Speaking of KC the GM plant in Fairfax was built on a WW2 airfield, but that was decades ago. You can easily see the old runways in satellite images.

Airports aren't usually the centre of a thriving residential area or business district, because they have to operate somewhere that big flying tubes can land and take off again safely. There's also a whole host of secondary issues like fuel + firefighting chemical contamination of the land it's built on, it's a bit difficult to have a cute back garden if your topsoil reeks of hydrocarbons lol

Funnily, Reykjavík airport is right next to Reykjavík city centre. There is an eternal fight between the city and the government over it, as the city wants to build there, and the land under the airport is pretty central to the city's vision of a bigger denser centre.
At the same time people out in the country want to keep it where it is for the easy access to the capital.

The surrounding areas arent very nice so I dont have high hopes for the airport being turned into anything interesting

At this point I wonder whether anything will ever get done with the Tempelhof grounds. The NIMBYs have gotten a lot of practice shutting down construction plans. Not that I mind, the place is pretty neat as it is.

It's tough to redevelop an airport because they're typically way outside of town, and airports turn the surrounding neighborhoods into ghettos.

I was at a development with narrow streets, walkable sidewalks, mixed-use, and all that jazz built on top of a former airport, but it didn't reuse infrastructure and was basically an outdoor shopping mall. A few hours to the north there's a runway that WAS turned into an actual road.

24 years after the last plane took off and it's still undeveloped and is served only by one bus line. A metro has been planned forever, but is projected to cost way more than the initial estimates and is currently due to open in 2029.

Even if the best case scenario where its possible to reclaim the entire footprint, its still a worse idea than trying to expand the urban area.

The absolute best case scenario is when the airport is located in the city center, but its parallel to a military airport. Which means once disarmament has been a policy for long enough, it should be possible to move the airfield to the military one and reclaim the air strip itself.
But the reclaiming is of too low value to be worth it, as the area taken by a airport is miniscule compared to a city requires in terms of area and infrastructure.

In the worst case scenario the airport is located in the middle of fucking nowhere, since air traffic is fucking noisy.
Which makes the entire area unattractive outside of the levelling and infrastructure built to support having a air port.

In 1985, Jakarta's Old Int'l airport in Kemayoran shut down. The runway got turned into a massive boulevard, Structures built are Exhibition center, some apartments and a golf course. Some old terminal buildings and a control tower still stand albeit neglected. It looks like the buildings constructed there aren't allowed to face the blvd. Transit exists in the form of a seasonal bus line.

I was wrong about my previous post, the old airport in Austin was developed into a normal subdivision. Pictured is the old airport. Note the tower above the "O" and the "W" of "TOWER".

mueller airport in austin and stapleton in denver. both older airports near city centers that were turned into mixed use, mostly residential neighborhoods. i'm surprised nobody has mentioned these yet. i live adjacent to mueller in austin and know a number of the key players in its redevelopment, if you have any questions about it. it's a pretty interesting case and has been, i think, quite successful, especially compared to what might have otherwise happened to the land if the surrounding neighborhoods hadn't organized for something other than a sell-off to a local developer

far from it. mueller is a relatively dense mixed use development, with some provision for affordable housing, even, which is no mean feat in the state of texas. if local developers had had their way, we would have gotten nothing but detached single family housing. it's certainly not perfect, but it's lightyears better than what we could have gotten.

Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale, California. Most of the site was redeveloped into a campus by Disney Studios and also a business park, with the air traffic tower (picrel) preserved as a museum. The runway became "Air Way" a regular street and you would never know if you didn't see the tower.

Singapore pretty much erased Kallang Airport from the maps, don't know if that counts as "redeveloping" though since it just blended into the surrounding areas other than a few buildings that were repurposed

I can think of a few instances where old, small General Aviation airports were developed into offices or housing with no trace of the airport left, but I don't think those really count. All the times I've seen larger airports get redeveloped, it's always looked sloppy.

There used to be an airport in a present day swedish town called Torslanda, not too long ago they took away the hangar sheds and now the only thing that is left is a bit of concrete and the air traffic control tower. Most of the land now is split between different stores, a golf course, a nature reserve and some sort of car warehouse.

They're going to redevelop an airfield here, but it'll take like 30 years. There was a fair bit of opposition to the plan, but they've already shut it down and I think they're building something there already

And here's a render with new tram routes. You can see the main airport in the top left corner. This one was for smaller private planes and they did some pilot training as well, but now they'll have to find a new location somewhere further away since the main airport has no room for that stuff

To add a bit more context, Paya Lebar was the Singapore main airport after Kallang shut down, but got demoted to airbase when Changi opened. Right now, the plan is to move operations to Changi and redevelop Paya Lebar into a new mixed-use district.

Khodynka in Moscow, though by the time it was closed actual passenger flights didn't land there for 50 years and it was an Ilyushin testing airfielf. It is now a park, but the renovation was a bumpy ride.

Formula E races there. For the series, the track is already kinda historic, since it hosted 6 races when the championship was grounded in Germany in 2020.

Both of my city old airport runways are now avenues. but not central avenues at all. Those tend to be the old roads around the airport.
The old airport is now a residential area named after the old airport operator, which has a little business building because it's pretty close to the really crowded business district. Not a bad place at all, but there's a ghettoish neighborhood at the south end, which it's being gentrified pretty successfully.
The old terminal and hangars are now goverment offices, but I can't imagine how do the work. I mean, there's another government buiding in what it used to be the platform, so not very good.

I got one that had a good idea but half assed execution. The old Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador is in the process of being turned into a giant linear park. It's been nearly 10 years since it ceased being an airport, but typical SA corruption and incompetent leaders have kept it from being completed, kind of unfortunate.
