Railtrack plc

No.1852213 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
What were the exact reasons the privatization of british rail network as Railtrack plc failed so spectacularly in the UK that the british government decided to renationalise it as Network Rail?
It has been discussed recently here in Germany with a fair bit of support across the political and public spectrum, to spin off the DB rail network companies operating within the publicly owned leviathan of the Deutsche Bahn AG, into a separate non-profit corporation and one of the regularly appearing counterarguments is the supposed failure of such a spin-off in the UK, but from what I vaguely remember reading ages ago the big problem of Railtrack was it being a for-profit company in charge of a chronically neglected and severely antiquated rail network and I wonder if somebody here might enlighten me more about the exact details of it's failure?
