What cons of riding too small frame?

Hey anon,
I'm about to buy my second bicycle ever.
I've been riding my mountain bike for the past 20 years, which according to the bike nerds out there is too small for me (I don't know bicycles had sizes).

This one in size 51 okay for me? The calculator says I should buy 53 but I'm worried it's rigged to show you the available sizes only.

Yeah. Anything from a 51 to a 54 should be fine. You just need to adjust the toptube length (reach) with a different stem length and seat fore and aft (setback) adjustment, and adjust stack height with spacers and/or a riser stem.

these small fixie brands have less than ideal geometry. size 52 from a good brand would be better. the effective top tube is only 50cm and it comes with a 70mm stem which is ridiculously short. it will feel cramped like a clown bike. mountain bikes there is more of a range for personal preference.

1. saddle must be set further back, v this leads to narrower hip flexor angle than intended (ass is too far away from the bottom bracket so you have to bend at the hip more)

2. stem needs to be longer, which fucks up steering feel and makes wider bars difficult to use

I would say don't fuck around and get the M. You are going to want to be able to stretch out nice on a fixie and having a cramped shitting dog back with suuuuuck.

The exception to this of course is if you are one of those Popeye looking guys (short legs long torso) 5 ft 9.

I wish they had listed standover height on their chart but it really seems like the S and M are not that far apart but you'd really be more suited for the M unless you are as I said a popeye leg guy

Its always better to go with a too small frame than one that is too big. You can always adjust a small frame up with stem, spacers and setback seat post, but you can't shrink the frame. A smaller than normal frame will also potentially handle better as you can adjust yourself more rearward on the bike and use a longer stem that makes steering smoother and less twitchy. A small bike with more seat post and stem also looks cooler.

Bike frame size recommendations are way to big, I'm 5' 8" and bought a small frame intended for those 5' 7" to 5' 3" and its still way too big, can barely stand over it due to my relatively short inseam, and have to adjust myself very forward on the bike which makes handling twitchy. Now my next bike will be an XXS because I only have 76cm inseam.

I would say the most helpful measurement is inseam. An easy way to pick the right size is one with a stand over height that is 1-1.5 inches shorter than your inseam. If theirs no standover height listed, you can determine it by seat tube height using this rule:

Multiply inseam by 1.07, subtract 37

That should be approximately the seat tube height for an endurance bike, for a sport bike with a more flat top tube add 1-2cm.

Its actually too big a bike which won't allow you too use full muscle group as you can't have the seat low enough and legs are overextended, most pros have quite a bit of knee bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

You can always put a longer seat post and longer stem more spacers and make the small frame bike have the same contact points as the larger frame bike. If you run out of adjustment on the large frame you can't do shit other than replace the whole frame.

Its not stupid shit, a 48 vs a 51 for instance will have at most 30mm stack height difference, meaning 30mm of spacers if the rider would be slammed on the other bike in ideal fit, while gaining 3cm of standover to prevent balls being crushed, and 3cm more seatpost for better comfort.

I've always heard size up as conventional wisdom and have personally suffered with too big of bikes for years. And I'm only a bit shorter than OP (I'm 172cm). It's only after watching that Brit bike fitter on youtube that the most common bike fit mistake is buying too big a bike, and most people suffer simply because they are too high up on the bike due to the big frame.

Ok so looking at it. What type of bike is this? I don't think it's a fast performance bike. If the OP is looking at buying it to train on a velodrome or ride hard in time trial style on a flat route, maybe he does want an aero fit. But it's not really the right bike for that. I think it's a beater. I think he would probably want bars as high as they can be. And he can favor the drops more to get aero. Even at saddle height would be good considering he can just ride in the drops and isn't losing shifting control there.

Saying he can't fix too much reach is wrong too. It's a fixie. He can run risers and delete a huge amount of reach.

I would size the bike to have standover clearance, and other than that, go as large as possible for the height. If the reach is excessive, it's fixable. A road bike you want to ride more on the hoods, be more serious generally, and can't change from drops, is different.

Modern road fitting logic is that the hoods are as low as you can tolerate, and the drops are a practically redundant position for aero descents or sprinting.

With a fixie you can actually take advantage of the fact you have a lower part of your bars, and set that for a reasonable primary 'fast' position, with the rest being comfier.
Look at pic rel, it's a pretty aero position, with barely any bar drop. A beater fixie should have bars at saddle height. So many fixiefags ride mostly on the tops.

It's way easier to make a too small frame work over a too large one. If the frame is too big there's nothing that can be done to fix it. Being a manlet or lanklet has nothing to do with this. If you put a tall dude on a too big frame he's going to have the exact same problems as a short guy on a too big frame. And as said fixing too small is doable, fixing too big is not possible.

He could be in pretty much the same position with his forearms completely flat on where the hoods would be. And still have that exact same position available. For someone 6 feet 56 is the "normal" size. 54 if you want a more racy fit. Definitely don't get ever a 58. If you want a more relaxed fit get a bike with more relaxed geometry in the right size.

On road use it is a literal non issue. It's only relevant in tight u turns. And in those your speed is so small that you can navigate around it. Also if you've got big feet you'll always have toe overlap on a road oriented bike. I've never had a road bike without toe overlap. And I wouldn't have one even if I sized up because the changes in front center are minimal between most sizes. Just look at the geometries of the bike in question, there's not going to be any real difference in front center between the 51 and 53. Never been a problem in well over 100 000 km for me.

On an MTB it might be a bigger issue but this thread is not about MTBs so it doesn't matter.

Yes BUT in order for a long torso to fit a small frame, saddle setback vs bottom bracket must increase -or- stem length must increase, assuming same saddle and bar fit as a larger frame.

Therefore, either the saddle will reach a point of being too far back, or the stem will be too long.

You can fit on a too small bike without either, and that is by completely changing your riding position to something that is more upright (shortening the torso) or putting road-type bars on a flat bar frame.

The only, and I mean literally the only reason you change saddle setback is to get your saddle in the proper position in regards to the BB. It should never be used as a reach adjustment.

To make reach adjustments you change stem length or bar reach. And there are long enough stems to get you fit into pretty much any bike you can ride in terms of saddle to bar drop.

The size chart posted is wrong. The image is from Chain Reaction Cycles, while the measurement posted here >>1855394 are from the manufacturer's website (Fahrrad.de owns Fixie inc)

And IMHO the sizes are measured C-C, so these bikes are all tall and long. Boatlike rides.

I was looking at the correct table, it's 4 mm difference in stack, 8 mm in reach. They're practically the same size. Also they've got pretty much the standard stack numbers for those sizes, but the reach is quite long. It's flat bar geometry definitely. With drops your reach is either excessive or you have to use super short stem.

Also reach and stack are the things you need to look at. Seat and top tube lengths are completely irrelevant for fit. Seattube angle matters a bit but usually doesn't drastically change between sizes. Same with BB drop, and in small sizes you want to look at what they've done with forks, head angle, rake.

The geometries on that bike are all over the place. The reach on 55 is shorter than on the 53. And given how close they are you can use any one of the 51, 53, or 55. That is if the reach isn't too long for you. Over 400 mm reach is super long for 56. It would probably work better with flat bars in the smaller sizes and for smaller riders. Otherwise you'd have to have super short stem to make it work.

it is inseam * 0.65.
In op it's 82 * 0.65 = 53,3

Both top and seat tube lengths are completely irrelevant and should not even be mentioned in geo charts because they make people confused. Stack and reach are what matters. They may have been useful in the 80s, but not in the last 20 years. The same is true with all the formulas that were derived back then, completely useless and have been for 20 years.

when we talk about finding the right size for a road bike we are talking about +/- 2cm. the issues you are describing would be for a bike that's obviously completely the wrong size which you shouldn't consider buying at all.
