i have a maze of freeways going through my city which is awesome, becuase driving form one part of the city to the other via surface streets is even slower than a bicycle, but for the most part, i can usually just hop on the freeway onramp by my house and be popped out on the other side of the city in a minute or four... of course the freeway is such a cluster fuck that some entrances dont connect to other exits, and some distance have to be traveled by surface street and usually take about 5x as long to travel that distance due to all the lights

and then they have been adding traffic pacification all over the city so now surface street movement is even slower, i thank god i live right next to a fucking freeway on/offramp

its also nice to not have to add 5-15 minutes of drivign to the freeway onramp like i had too in all the other suburbs i lived in. fuck i hate the suburbs, literally forced to drive anywhere and everywhere. i drive my truck like once a week and can ride the bicycle almost anywhere else i need to go.

They're not going anywhere except in very select locations, and the reclaimed land will be turned into a multi-lane road instead of a park with some meme light rail system. Freeway caps will be uncommon as well, they're just too expensive. Cope all you want, but it's true.

If you look at freeway removal projects in the U.S. historically, they've almost all been outdated pre-Interstate highways or other routes that have been outmoded and replaced by other routes, and the ones that did get removed just get replaced with wide boulevards.

The idea of some sort of mass freeway removal from anti-personal vehicle activists is failing to read the room when it comes to political power, there's a reason why Democrat-controlled cities get all the highway funds, because most of their constituents STILL drive their own car.

If the ridership can't pay for the maintenance, then let it fall apart and then tear it down.
If the ridership is paying for the maintenance (but short and long-term financing for replacement at end-of-life), then it's just sunk capital and can stick around.
Sucks for the people whose city was sliced apart, but you can build a walkable community on either side of the divide.

If the subsidies are going to anything, it should be local travel. Travel that starts and ends within the jurisdiction paying for it. Places for walking, cycling, or taking short trips by car.
The people traveling 15km or more can pay their way. And people wanting stuff from more than 15km away can pay for it too.
Because people paying for their own shit is how we build the shit that actually benefits the most people. If the answer really is "highways," at least the market figured that shit out rather than some idiot politician acting on their assumptions.

Literally nobody benefits from car dependency except oil companies and car companies. Suburban families end up paying out the ass for cars (and the high interest loans that come with), insurance, maintenance, gas, and other expenses. Their kids can't go anywhere without being chauffeured by their parents, they spend hours a week in traffic. they drive on deadly roads that kill their youth. all so that they can breath polluted air and get fatter by the year by shoving down fast food they bought from the drive thru because all of their time, energy, and money was sapped out of them by their cars.

Suburbanites would be way healthier, wealthier, and happier if they embraced dense, mixed use, walkable town design.

2. Your tax dollars alone don't cover the highway system. the highway fund leans heavily on federal and state income tax dollars which are funded in large part by people who don't drive. Especially for roads at a local level which are funded by sales and property taxes of people who may or may not drive.
3. If we're going to subsidize highways, we need to be honest with ourselves: are these highways actually making our lives better? I've already explained that they have not. (at least not the highways running right through city centers). And so I'm not letting you wiggle your way out of this: has car infrastructure made anyone but wealthy car and gas magnates better off? and if so explain how?
