Shinano... aren't those the same as the "Wide Views" that ran on the Hida?
I'm pretty sure I remember hearing the Wide View Hidas already got replaced. Why was the Shinano rolling stock left unchanged?

The KiHa 85 Series DMUs built for Hida and Nanki are obviously different compared to the 383 Series EMU for Shinano and the KiHa 85 is a bit older than the 383 (late 80s compared to mid 90s), and yes they are currently in the progress of being replaced although I don't know when the whole process will be complete

Gives the operator an overhead view while allowing a passenger gangway if another train is coupled up to it. They could put the cab to the side for a more conventional arrangement, but it would be smaller. Perhaps putting the cab on top gives both operators and passengers more room by getting both out of the way of each other. Some of the blunt-nosed trains don't even have gangways, but I still like them.

Oh I see. I learned something today.
But now I'm torn between thinking that's neat, and thinking that it's overkill and you might as well have the two units coupled without gangway, which is very common in Europe.

Mostly since the use case for those is combining and disconnecting two trains at some point during the journey without needing to have personnel in place to check that no one is in the section between the units.
Alike to what JR East is doing on the Touhoku Shinkansen.
The use case for these train sets is strengthening and weakening a train set between journeys, where you'd very much like for the two sections to be connected. It's far from "overkill".

In Switzerland this sometimes leads to one train having two open restaurants because people would complain if the one in their section were to be closed.

The gauge has fuck all to do with that. All cape gauge trains in Japan are 3 meters wide, which is the same as the standard gauge parts of EU.

JR Hokkaido tested 200km/h operation on cape gauge in Seikan Tunnel for Aomori-Hakodate services back when Hokkaido Shinkansen seemed like it wouldn't happen, but they were already in their current financial downward spiral so they abandoned the idea(which some argue helped the push to have the government finance Shinkansen via JRTT). If anything, the problem is the opposite. They wanted more twisty track to save money on tunneling and bridging, but that meant they couldn't raise speeds for intercity transit down the line. For example there is a line between Hiroshima(1.2m people) and the Izumo/Matsue/Yonago metropolitan area(~400k people total), but because it slows down to as low as 25km/h for sharp curves and potentialy falling rocks, everyone just takes the bus, which is why there's no direct train nowadays.

A group is now suing JR East and Tokyo Metro, asking for ~200USD compensation from national government, by claiming their fare system constitute illegal discrimination against specific group of passengers
After year 1971, due to the Five Direction Commute Operation, Joban line local trains can no longer access Ueno station directly and are instead through run toward Tokyo Metro, and for passengers on Joban line stations only served by local trains between Kita-Senju station and Matsudo station, there are two possible transfer locations to Ueno, either via Kita-Senju or Nippori.
Transferring via Kita-senju is cheaper as it is totally within Joban line, but Joban line local trains stop at Metro station at Kita-senju, passengers must move across transfer path across multiple floors to reach the real Joban line platform, which is said as being difficult to people with lower mobility like elderly. On the other hand, transfer via Nippori is more convenient, however it involve going from JR to Tokyo Metro and then back to JR's route, thus minimum fare is being charged three times and resulted in 40% more expensive fare.

This one specifically mention Second Seikan Tunnel plan.

A rather interesting video on the upcoming introduction of ATO on the Tokaidou Shinkansen.

What are the historical reasons why formations on commuter/suburban train lines in Kanto are limited to XX number of cars?

How did Tokaido, Tohoku, Joban and Yokosuka end up accommodating 15-car trains (previously 11 cars long) but Yamanote is 11 cars (formerly 10), Keihin-Tohoku and Saikyo are 10 cars, Chuo-Sobu/Chuo Rapid are 10 cars (12 cars for Limited Express), (!), etc.

Was there any rhyme or reason to this? The Nambu Line being limited to 6 cars sticks out like a sore thumb. It's not JR but Hibiya Line trains were 6-cars long until 1971.

Might or might not be due to pre-existing infrastructure since the length of the platforms (and now platform doors) will probably determine the length, aside from the typical excuses the delays in lengthening the platforms in every station are probably why Chou-Line Rapid is still 10 cars until the mid-2020s (it is supposed to be either 12 cars or 8+4 cars with 2 Green Cars)

One of the features they probably consider while choosing which stations an express services is the length of the station, allowing certain services to be operated with longer formations.

In typical Japanese overcautious fashion, JR West subsequently spent boatloads of money instealling these wings on most of their trains.

Glad that it's now safer, but surely there are better ways of spending hundreds of millions of yen to save 1 or 2 deahts every few decades.

Europe 2022 is too diverse for that.
Everyone would get robbed and some even get raped on top of that.
Maybe except for Norway. They at least had extremely space-efficient, but comfortable sleeper seat cars on the (relative) cheap.

Unless the environmental asessment is so bad that it makes sense to reroute, the route is already set to pic related. From Tsuruga to Higashi-Obama, then in a long-ass tunnel under rural Kyoto, Kyoto station, north to Matsuiyamate station, and finally turning west to Shin-Osaka. JR Central denied just joining into Tokaido Shinkansen at any location because it's already at capacity(which is immediately obvious during peak holidays like Obon).

Because Japan explicitly made a law that let them do so. At the time of ~1970s-1980s, politicians seeing the opening of Shinkansen and degrading performance on old lines caused by lost of former limited express services, which ended up with bringing massive debt and operating lost to JNR, try to avoid this situation by holding local governments fiscally responsible for the construction of Shinkansen. And even if fare income do be able to cover operation cost of trains on conventional line, it might be taking away intercity passengers from the Shinkansen, which mean JR will still be earning much less from passengers travelling between two places compared to if they take Shinkansen, while costing extra to operate two different set of service on two different tracks and platforms using two different vehicles, as opposed to using only a single Shinkansen train to transport everyone.

Only for the wide-skirted double deck cars, standard cars works just fine. While their loading gauge is actually wider than japanese, it shrinks at bottom which is a tight fit on low platforms, and some railroad switch motor placement somehow violated(?) their own standard.

There aren't any newly built large train stations from the ground up IIRC, but Osaka Station is probably one of the major stations that had a facelift completed recently along with Shinjuku, Hiroshima, Niigata Stations undergoing major renovations

The newest large train station would probably be Takanawa Gateway. The emphasis is on "new", though.

Unlike Europe or Muricca, most Japanese stations despite many of the big ones being the busiest in the world are very unimpressive architecturally. The trains are great, cleanliness and efficiency are great, but the stations are usually just something frankensteined to somehow manage ever increasing capacities since the rail lines were built in the early 1900s.

As someone else said Osaka station and Kyoto perhaps? Kanazawa has a nice wooden gate arch, but that's about it.

All the gigantic stations in terms of passenger numbers (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro etc.. ) are basically just massive stations with massive shopping centers attached. Looking at the dizzying number of shops is very fun, but the interiors are very utlitarian and boring. It's all about just cramming people in the station efficiently

For me, Miyazaki itself was a complete waste of a morning, but the train ride on the Nichinan Line and Nippo Line was great fun.

The Asato line is attached to the Mugi line at Awa-Kainan. The section between Awa-Kainan and Mugi has THE worst traffic density in all of JR Shikoku, and the section before it(Anan - Mugi) is the 4th worst. It would've been the first candidate for closure, but now JR Shikoku can't do it, because taxpayer money has been spent on this trial, and the whole model relies on connecting with JR trains. It's doing what it's supposed to, to much chagrin of Ehime prefecture, who's now been told by JR Shikoku that the Yodo Line and one branch of the Yodo line that avoids Uchiko are both on the chopping block. I can't find the video right now, but the prefectural governor literally said in a press conference something along the lines of "JR Shikoku is bossing around like a mad king"

Number one sounds very scary, but in practice I can't think of many places where it can be applied. The article gives Geibi Line as an example. From a quick look at a map I can see Nichinan Line(Kagoshima/Miyazaki), that part of Inbi Line that is bypassed via Chizu Express(Tottori/Okayama), Obama Line(Kyoto/Fukui), Senmo Line(Hokkaido), maybe Hanawa Line(Akita/Iwate) but it wouldn't make sense to challenge it's viability while it's still being rebuilt(unless "see, bus replacement is good enough" counts as a demonstration project). Yodo line is already in closure talks, and Yonesaka Line might as well be.

90%+ of Japanese users will take the plane between Nagasaki and Omiya (or anywhere near Tokyo.), so the results make sense.

The only weirdos like you who want to change trains at Takeo-Onsen and Hakata twice, and spend a total of at least 7 hours on different trains, not to mention pay at least 30000 yen for that privilege are train autists and gaijins with their cheating JR pass that lets them take enormous distances on trains for a ridiculously low price.

Taking a plane requires less changes, is significantly faster, and also significantly cheaper (especially if you take peach or jetstar). Why wouldn't Yahoo show you this clearly superior option?

As the name says, it goes through Takayama, so it actually has decent ridership. That said, if JR West lets go of other lines in the area, it might not make sense to have a machine park just for what I assume is one local train(JR West portion is only 36km, and express trains are run by JR Central who owns rest of the line). It would be interesting to see if JR Central would take it if JR West decided to let it go. Even if not, Ainokaze Toyama Railway would probably take it just for passage fees from JR Central and JR Freight.
>Himi Line(top) and Johana Line(bottom), which are on opposite sides of Takaoka station and are not connected
Himi Line is already in talks of being converted to a tram and connected to the nearby Manyosen lines.
Johana Line had the same proposed as well, but I've heard many say it'd make more sense to make it a part of Ainokaze, or even it's own 3rd sector.

There is already some separation as JR West owns the entire line, but only runs trains up to Wakura Onsen(which is where the map ends on the flyer), and service further north is provided by a 3rd sector called Noto Railway. However, currently there's one Thunderbird per day go between Osaka and Wakura Onsen on a weekday, with up to 4 on weekends and holidays, but JR West has made a statement that there will be no more Thunderbirds after opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension. Something will change, but there haven't been any statements yet, probably because sides involved haven't agreed yet on what to do.

Seishun 18 ticket is not valid in Mid february to March, so this does not compete with it, although it is similar. Considering there is no cheap all you can ride ticket in Feb-March, then this is a pretty good deal.

A shame it has to be 4 consecutive days though....

I can see it being very good if you combine it with the "ticketless" online cheap express fares on JR West's E5489 website (I checked and this Dokomade ticket supports online discount tickets)

The only stretch I see JR Shikoku not dumping after Shinkansen is Anan - Tokuyama - Takamatsu - Matsuyama - Uchiko - Yawatahama - Uwajima, with both outermost sections being a big maybe.
I can honestly see them trying to push for Shinkansen to Kochi first to be able to offload inland local lines kept just for express trains in/to Kochi. It's also interesting to ponder whether Fukui or Kochi would become the first prefecture with Shinkansen but no local JR lines.

Second Seikan Tunnel isn't happening in the current proposed form because it's focus on road traffic in the current era of driver shortages, with a single track rail line added as an afterthought. If it's redesigned to be like the Channel Tunnel then it'll actually be viable. And Hoyo Strait Tunnel wouldn't improve the situation for anyone but Oita and Yawatahama, and they're focused on pushing East Kyushu Shinkansen.

There's a few asterisks to that map though, so I looked for the same file and made mine.
If we assume that it's constructed fully, including Osaka and Oita connections, then the best case scenario is 5 remaining sections: Matsuyama - Imabari, Yawatahama - Uwajima, Kubokawa(or Susaki) - Kochi, Awa-Ikeda - Tokushima and Anan - Tokushima.
But what I think will actually happen is JR Shikoku will push for Shinkansen across the Seto Ohashi and splitting off to Takamatsu and Kan'onji or Shikokuchuo just to get their foot in the door. Then they'll continue with the momentum with Matsuyama Shinkansen(possibly extended to Uchiko if we take the current trend of tourism oriented Shinkansen with Takeo Onsen and Oita's Beppu route proposal) and Kochi Shinkansen. And by the time talks about the rest of it come up depoulation ruins cost/performance calculations and it's shelved forever. As for Tokushima Shinkansen, I think it depends on JR West pushing for Shinkansen from Osaka to Wakayama, which they're currently not doing.

For the Matsuyama to Imabari section, it does not work that way.
First, as exemplified in Nagano, it's totally the right of JR to decide which lines or stations should be separated from JR into 3 sector so if they want to keep they wouldn't need to try arguing.

Third, that section is currently used by express trains that run from Matsuyama to other Shikoku cities so no doubt it us conventional line.

New Shinkansen 「E8 series」 Public Reveal

JR East revealed the new shinkansen series set to begin operations by spring of 2024.

One key change is that the service's operating speed in the Touhoku shinkansen (Fukushima to Tokyo) will increase 25 km/h to 300 km/h, from the current 275 km/h, the operating limit of the E3 series currently in use.

Other changes include:
- bogie heaters to deal with frost

From March 2012, some Tsubasa services run coupled with Yamabiko services formed of E2 series trains, instead of E4 series sets, allowing the maximum speed to be raised from 240 km/h to 275 km/h on the Touhoku Shinkansen tracks, and shaving up to 6 minutes off journey times between Tokyo and Shinjō. Disregarding speed limits, acceleration and so on, by the same metrics this 25 km/h speed increase should further save 4 minutes and a bit from the journey.

I distinctly remember reading somewhere than JR Hokkaido is taking subsidies for tourist trains on this line that are expiring either this or next year.
Shibecha to Shiretoko-Shari section is doing the worst, only one station over 11 average passengers per day in pre-covid numbers and it's more than half of the line by distance. Or JR Hokkaido might just sack the whole line since the only three stations over 50 pax/day are the two mentioned and Katsuradai(less than a mile away from Abashiri station).
>Hakodate Main Line
Closure of Oshamanbe to Niseko section earlier than on Hokkaido Shinkansen opening to redevelop the land in preparation for it has been proposed, but I don't know if that went anywhere.

The subsidy is until next April, but it never was specifically for Senmo Line, rather for purchasing tourist trains that are leased to JR Hokkaido for free as long as they run them where local ridership is low but prefectural government sees tourist potential.

Video report showing the last day of the Rumoi - Ishikari-Numata track, and then talking about past and future of the Rumoi station area. It seems like Rumoi wants to pivot into being a base camp for outdoorsy people, with the station building getting demolished and rutned into a big outdoor store. I imagine they only come out at night like with regular shinkansen where even if some train is deadheading it'll be going way slower and often stopping. Here's an old video of Suit taking the last Yamabiko that was very late due to some earlier train having a malfunction, and since it was past midnight he got caught inbetween deadheading trains and ended up taking over 4 hours from Fukushima to Tokyo(normally 1h50m).

Iwaki 12:14 pm > Futaba 1:12 pm (If you miss this one you are screwed since the next train that stops at Futaba doesn't arrive until 3 pm or so and you won't get to Futaba until 4 pm)

Leg 3: Futaba to Tokyo / Sendai

To Tokyo: Futaba 5:29 pm > Tokyo 8:45 pm (Ltd. Express Hitachi 26, as I said before the train service is stupidly sparse in Futaba and you don't get a southbound local train to Mito until close to 5 pm since you want to stay in there for at least two hours)
To Sendai: Futaba 4:00 pm > Sendai 5:25 pm (Ltd. Express Hitachi 13)

The general plan is go back to Tokyo metropolitan area, however another possible alternative is overnight at Aizu Wakayama or Nikko, but there doesn't seems to exist fast transit link from Futaba or Ooarai to these places

There is one that opens at 5:30 am (Matsuri) but I'm not sure if you can do everything within 12 minutes. The store itself is actually very convenient since it is right next to the stairs exiting the platform at the Central Corridor, but I'm unsure how much are you carrying.

I'm not sure if 25,000+ Yen cost is worth it (according to Navitime), that's around three quarters of the cost of a Japan Rail Pass

Now that I read about Futaba, I would assume you want to visit the town and witness what happened to the town after the Tohoku Earthquake? I actually thought of the idea of visiting Nikko > Aizuwakamatsu > Sendai and then you can travel through the whole Joban Line southbound towards Tokyo stopping along at Futaba and Ooarai but even that still leaves you relatively few options (you have to leave Sendai at around 7:20am) as the service between Haranomachi and Iwaki is sparse.

Image absolute related as it was the lone 651 Series EMU set (K202) that was abandoned in Haranomachi Station after the Tohoku Earthquake and eventually scrapped in 2017
