The airtag is worth every penny and has me using an iphone indefinitely. It has saved my bike 4 times. I refuse to carry a heavy u-lock and use weak zip-tie locks or don't lock at all because i know I will catch the perp. a 4-pack of airtags gets down to $85. I attach one to the bottle cage mounts with security torx bolts through a plastic airtag-specific mount. This has never been removed by a crackhead. I also have one in the frame incase crackheads get clever one day.

They ping very frequently in dense areas. The longest I was waiting for a ping after a bike theft was about 50 minutes. It requires no subscription like a GPS would. I cannot recommend these things enough to all bike owners.

best theft protection is having a bike that looks so shitty or/and distinctive that nobody would want or dare to steal it
add a light u-lock or a chain that looks at least a bit more substantional than a cable lock and you can gurantee that opportunist will take the bike next to yours instead

Afaik, once you've set it up, it should only beep when it is being used to tail another iphone user as some sort of anti-stalking measure. I haven't experienced this beeping personally.

The airtag is associated with your apple ID so if you have another apple computer or log into another device you could hunt down the airtag and your stolen phone.
