Slipped on a patch of ice and scratched up my right brifter, twisted the stem out of alignment, ripped holes in my right trouser knee and palm of my glove, and my right wrist feels a bit tender. Not sure if the derailleur hanger managed to avoid getting bent or not.
Not a great day. Could have been worse I guess though.

i was riding home in an ice storm that just started last year, going maybe 7mph since i was aware of the ice..still hit that one patch where it felt like someone drop kicked my front wheel and went down. hurt but at least i landed on grass and didnt break anything on the bike. i ran my tires under the recommended psi after that

Yesterday I was thinking about getting a heated vest for this winter, so I decided to make one. I cut the sleeves off an old faded full zip jersey and attached carbon heat rope. I was aiming for around 15.5 watts power, but it came in a little low at 13.4W. Not instantly hot but heat starts to build after a few minutes. But I did want to stay within the output capability of a single USB-C power bank.

When I was making 9V USB-C heated gloves last winter I also picked up a few 12V USB-C modules one of which I used for this. The higher voltage allows for longer heating loops.

The most annoying time consuming part is simply attaching the heating loop and wiring to the jersey. Lots of double sided fabric tape, and attaching fabric from worn out cycling shorts to make a channel.

Total heat loop length is 2 meters. I'm glad I drew myself a picture as I was going to wire it as 3 loops. But I realized I could do it as a single piece and attach a positive wire to both ends and negative in the middle for much less work.

That's pretty neat, though frankly I don't understand why you'd want extra heat coming from a vest. Heated gloves make total sense, and heated shoes could be really nice, but after your legs your core is the easiest part of the body to overheat when riding in the cold... at least that was always my experience.

For the most part overheating is a bigger issue for me, especially on the fat bike. Many winter rides I'll have my jacket open 1/3 much of the ride down to -15C.

On longer winter rides my core temp often starts to fade towards the end of the ride. I'd probably turn it on after an hour or more. Part of the reason I used a jersey is that I didn't want to add more insulation. Also I dress to be comfortable while moving and get cold if I have to stop for prolonged periods like getting stuck at a long train.

Pulled a roofing nail out of my flat tire today. While patching the tube I finally managed to find the very slow leak that required me to top up pressure every 2-3 days. Even with soap on the tube there was barely any bubbling at the leak.

It's kind of a hope one day that there's a cop at that bottom of the hill and I get pulled over for speeding while on the bike. Sure the ticket will suck but I can proudly boast that I got pulled over for going 4X in a 25 while on a fucking road bike.

Damp, windy and miserable today. Most of my unpaved shortcuts have been muddy since it snowed. The ground dries out so slowly this time of year. But at some point wet or not it will just freeze solid.

Same temp as yesterday, about 8C, but it was sunny so it felt much nicer. I think sunny days tend to be less damp too. Starting next Sunday there are no more above freezing days in the forecast which will take care of the mud.

The chamois stitching on my bibs is coming loose causing the chamois to chaff. So I optimistically pulled out an old pair of shorts I haven't used in a few years because they would cause me to breakout in hives. And surprise surprise I'm still allergic to them. Its not an immediate thing, it takes several rides for it to gradually get worse and worse.

I had used that exact model of shorts through 3 pairs and it was only 6 months into the 3rd pair where the started bothering me.

I'm always behind a new project or idea, I just seem to not be able to be at ease with what I have. I've completed the fixed gear project and it's now as I want it, at least that's finished. I recently bought a classic roadie that needs some love, or at least new rubber. Now I'm searching the local classifieds for a nice cro-mo frame or complete atb/mtb bike to make a single speed bike.
My wife's bf doesn't let me have three bikes, we don't have the space to store them but I'm still searching used bikes.

Freehub on my unlabeled rear hub is crapping out. Its probably a Formula, but my LBS doesn't have a replacement for it. Its for my bike with 2 rear wheels, so I'll just swap the front / rear wheels for now. The bike is made of random parts and the front rim is tubeless ready which makes it a bastard to mount / dismount tires so I generally prefer to keep up front where I'm less likely to get a flat.

I was looking at my Strava total. My total cycling time adds up to 247 days. Maybe another 5 years to achieve 1 year of on-bike time.

I also have another 18,400 km pre-Strava and if I divide that by my all time average speed from Garmin Connect that would be another 920 hours bringing me up to 285 days of riding time and knock a bit under 2 years off the time to get to 365.

today's ride was just some laps around the freshly paved cemetery to bed in my new brake pads. i upgraded from the stock 1 piston calipers to 2 piston and i finally have brakes that don't squeal. having a quiet bike really makes riding more enjoyable.

First ride of the season on snow today. I saw my colder weather balaclava around the house in the past week but of course can't remember where. It was only -10C so a lighter one was good enough, but I like to carry a backup. The fat bike trails were in decent shape already.

No idea, but if it's a ferry it's certainly not for any kind of public use. There's that rail yard next to it in the pic, and there's another rail yard up the river about a mile (opposite direction from the photo), but they're for servicing different kinds of trains (commuter vs subway) so while it's tempting to think they use it to move people and light equipment back and forth, if I was a real foamer I would probably find the idea preposterous.

Getting a bit too warm this week. Lots of brown slush / sugar snow just a mess. When the roads are like that I don't feel at all bad about riding my fat bike on the sidewalk. I try my best to stay on the least driven roads where the snow stays pure and packed hard.

wanderer.earth is getting pretty addictive really fast. I'm now considering go riding just to complete some zones of the map I would've never ridden to otherwise. I like it, I get to know the city and avoid potholes in places I'm not familiar with.

The first year a new privately operated motorway opened here they sprayed a shitload of calcium chloride on the road ahead of a snow storm that didn't happen. I hate dogs and dog walkers taking up the entire path and sometimes part of even the street so this is the least that I can do. I'm sure the dog walkers hate it, but it is so funny.

Night rides 2 days in a row. The fat bike trails are not great at the moment. They ran the motorized groomer over the snowshoe packed trails. Since the groomer is wider there are invisible soft spots everywhere. With my helmet light I was able to see the firm part of the trail for the most part. I might just avoid the trails until they run the groomer over it one more time.

Tonight was really nice, -3C with light wind. Disgusting brown crap on the roads though, but I can avoid most of it by sticking to alleys and side roads.

The fat bike trails were a lot firmer tonight for a group ride. I thought I gave myself plenty of time to ride the 11 km to the start, but I got there just after the ride started, but they happened to be riding past where I was approaching from. Took 48 minutes elapsed time to get there including a wait at a traffic light, and waiting to cross a few roads. Fat bikes are so slow.

With snow on the ground running my headlights on low is usually more then enough light. Still doesn't help my crappy camera take pictures while moving.

All the streetlights are now LED. That conversion was handled by the power utility. The main park that falls under provincial jurisdiction has LED light on both the roads and MUP.

But the city itself is happy to stick with LPS lights. Though only a handful of parks in the city have path lighting at all.

I've been thinking of getting a dropper post for my fat bike. But for that to work I'd have to stop using my trunk bag. I suppose I could use one my small panniers.

Getting started from a stop when the trails aren't packed it really helps to be sitting. Otherwise the rear wheel spins out as you try to kick off and get up on the saddle. Often that can throw your balance off just enough that you end up veering off the singletrack.

I know what you're talking about with the kicking off thing. Sometimes you find pieces of trail where you have to maintain momentum. If you come to a stop it's impossible to get going again. Then you just have to plod on foot until you find firmer ground. I've never thought of a dropper post when that happens. I doubt it will work though. I could be wrong though, so try it and report back. You won't be riding any great distances in conditions like that so you won't need the trunk bag.
If you encounter loose sections out on a longer adventure then just walk it.

Fatbikes really aren't that great on loose terrain like snow or sand as one would like to believe. Pretty good in mud though, in my experience, but I hate having my bike and myself being caked in mud.

Went out for 3 hours just before 5am to beat wind and too warm temperatures forecast for later. It was a steady +1 the entire ride. Its great being out early when there is hardly any traffic, several red lights were ignored. Saw a deer over by the fat bike trails for about a km, it would repeatedly run for a bit then stop until I started getting closer.

Steady around 2C for my ride. The fat bike trails survived the +7 yesterday. More snow tomorrow night which should add to a good packed base, assuming we don't get so much snow we can't find the existing trail. One way to find a buried trail is look for rabbit tracks, they always run on the most packed snow. Often if you come across a rabbit while riding the trail, they just start running down the trail to get away from you.

You see groups of partridges running around together here all winter. Sometimes if you don't notice them, they'll wait until you are a few feet away to fly off. I almost ran over one sitting in the middle of the road at night because it looked like a fast food bag.

Weather turned cold, and loose snow would have made riding miserable the past few days. Off to do some fat bike trail snow shoeing tonight. Loading up one of those plastic scoop shovels in the car along with a few concrete blocks to act as a trail smoother / packer. Should go fairly quick as the motorized groomer already did a pass last night.

parisians are shitty, but so are most people from big cities: car drivers, scooter riders, pedestrians, bicyclists, they all don't give a shit about anything but themselves. paradoxically, it is extremely bike friendly. and seeing the tower, the grand/petit palais, obelisk, cathedral everything never gets old

Doored for the first time today. Was coming to a stop next to a taxi at a light. Taxi had been stopped for at least 20 seconds. As I pulled up beside, woman opened the door and I crashed directly into the side of the door frame.

No major damage. Shifters needed to be adjusted and I cracked my GPS mount (now decorated with NYC taxicab yellow) but easy enough to glue that.

I was on the left. It was a one way road with a bike lane, but had lost the bike lane at the intersection due to construction so I was just pulling up next to cab to make the turn.

Definitely will be more careful around cabs in the future. Thankfully I was already going pretty slow since I had slowed down for the intersection

First time out in nearly 2 weeks. Yesterday morning it was -30C, but it warmed up to -9 today and the wind wasn't bad. If warmed up briefly last weekend, but was accompanied by 60 km/h winds throughout the temp swing.

Its a fat bike trail because a mtb club got approval from the park to put it there, and arranges the grooming. They can't actually keep anyone off it. The full loop is 13 km.

At the moment a mtb could probably make it around without messing it up too much. But as the snow gets deeper throughout the winter skinny tires cause more an more damage, particularly in corners. Its pretty easy for a mountain bike to dig in at a corner and take out 5" of the trail. After a big snowfall parts of trail get lost and the groomer doesn't line up with the packed trail, and those spots are soft for a week.

Walkers leave divots making for a bumpy ride. If it got lots of foot traffic it would pack down rock hard, but it meanders too much for many people to use it.

Even early in the season when the snow isn't deep, its nice to have a place that's free of salt and sand, and where the studded tires aren't constantly buzzing.

as for me I'm feeling great, went on a really tough offroad ride this saturday, the kind that most people do on hardtails, some people even camp at the top of the mountain and do the whole thing in two parts. very few venture on gravel bikes.

In some turn of events, just as I was talking about how I was impressed by not having a real puncture in these tires yet, I get a real puncture today. I'm in good headspace and deliveryslave work today was good, and it's the front wheel so I'm good, swapped the tube and continued work. It would be nice is mofackas stop throwing their friggin glass bottles on the street, fukin hell.

Not bad at all, especially the environment I ride in and the miles I put down but when I factor in how good these tires grip and feel, even the Duro version with the sidewall protection, these are awesome tires. I might even go as far as assume the non-Duro version is up there against GP5ks in terms of grip, feel, and speed.

It's just puncture season here since street sweeping switched to snow plow so those kind of glass shards are everywhere.

-3C when I woke up, -6C by the time I finished breakfast 30 mins later, -8C when I went out for a ride. Still ok riding weather. Lots of loose snow on the roads, so I just followed the ruts. Paths haven't been plowed yet since it snowed on xmas.

It was 16 days since my last ride because the weather has been stupid cold and windy. Its always an extreme, later today its going to rain.

We got a bunch of freezing rain this evening. On the up side it will keep the snow under it from blowing around. On the down side, any snow tonight will blow right off it. There was a big snow a few days ago so it shouldn't be too icy tomorrow as there wasn't a clear surface for it to stick to. The crust layer should just break when riding across it.

Paths are all plowed or at least walked on enough to roll on through. I should have worn my heavier wind proof pants. It was windier than I was expecting and my less restrictive tights weren't warm enough going into the wind. They were pretty good coming back with the wind.

The side roads that get a moderate amount of traffic are full of loose snow that sucks to ride on. So I've been using the sidewalk in a few areas.

Finished the year with under 10,000 km for the first time since 2014. But well over half my riding this year was on my mountain bike.

A solder joint in my heated glove that I've fixed twice already went up to over 200F again during yesterday's ride (the connection further up the glove than my fingers usually reach so it wasn't in constant contact). I should have it permanently fixed now by changing how I do the carbon to wire connection. After testing the 3 and 4mm diameter copper tube I ordered, I settled on using 4mm to make crimps. One 300mm copper tube, trimmed into 105 little rings a bit over 2mm wide each. Sliding the tube over a drill bit and using diagonal cutters while rotating the tube half way worked well.

By under performing I'm assuming you mean runtime. Runtime can drop off a lot in the cold. Did you try doing a runtime test indoors when its warm.

I have a huge 6 cell battery for my light so that covers me for my longest rides in the winter.

I started a ride around sunset tonight. I think there was an odd north south temperature gradient in the city today. I noticed weather station just north of me was 3C warmer. At the start of the ride it was -10C, and hour in when I got to the park I was going ride around in it had dropped to -17C. The front of my legs were going numb, so I cancelled that plan and started riding back home. While going back north the temperature went back up to -13C and my legs warmed up. When checked the other weather station its still 3C warmer. It's fairly odd for my legs to get cold when everything else is warm.

A few spots where the trail gets unavoidably too close to the road and the plow flings crap onto it. Both my boot heater batteries conked out before the end of the ride, one much sooner than the other. I have some larger capacity batteries I can install. I've been using the current batteries for 4 or 5 winters and they are probably starting to degrade or develop an imbalance between the cell pairs.

It turned out one heater stopped working because a wire got pulled out of the power button. Those heaters were only sold one season due to that design flaw. When I contacted the company after the first time it broke they sent me 5 or 6 extras. The wire is connected to the board with thin 26 or 28 gauge wire with no strain relief mechanism. I duct taped the buttons into clearance bin phone holders back in 2019 and they didn't give me any trouble until today. Except for a green LED burning out last year so instead of lighting up white when on medium, it is pink now.

The snow finally came but not enough to make a difference for skiing here. Oh well, going on a trip soon where I'll have all I can handle. But it will make rides even more difficult because it'll probably ice over for at least a day after.

Sometimes you need a break from being on edge. My nearest true bike path isn't so crowded so I can manage a decent training pace with some nice greenery and hills but its a bit short and disjointed like most paths around here - significant unpaved sections and such.

I stumbled across another trail someone made. Much narrower than the ones the bike club makes, but it was packed firm. Not much room for error in the turns, you need to go wide with the front wheel the back one does fall off the trail, but not so wide the front wheel is off into the deep snow.

I know the feel. Commuting 10 km/day five days a week for several years has been good for both my physical and mental health. Also helps that almost my whole commute is on separated bike paths and I don't have to contend with cars, except for at a few crossings.

I should have check the chain at home before heading again this morning, but didn't. 14 km into the ride I noticed a ticking sound, then saw I was riding with half of an inner link missing. Maybe it broke today, maybe it was already broken. I didn't fell like screwing with it so I just rode 7 km home taking it easy.

When I got home I noticed one of my quick link plates was also broken in half. 4 breaks in this chain. It think its time for a new chain.

While replacing the chain I discovered I wasn't riding with 2 broken links, I was riding with 4 broken links. While the chain was off I noticed the bottom bracket was wobbly so I swapped that out too.

Yeah, Grey Partridges there are tons of them around here in groups during the winter even in the city. A few days ago when I was riding down an alley at night a group kept flying away and landing in front of me, a few did that 4 or 5 times. They can really puff themselves up. Sometimes I'll see them in the backyard.

Hopped on a rail line and rode it out of town. Its nice once there is enough snow to bury the rail ties, dog walkers pack it down. Very unpleasant wind coming back after the rail line met up with a gravel road.

The saddle on my fat bike has a tendency to slip backwards very slowly over time no matter how tight I clamp it. I usually don't notice it until I start getting chaffing from going over bumps and coming down on the saddle in the wrong spot. It doesn't take much, it was 1/4" out when I measured it.

The problem seems to be with the Brooks Pro saddle. The saddle rails aren't the same spacing as modern saddles, particularly when you get toward the back. I need to use channel lock pliers to squeeze them enough just to get them into the seat clamp. The rails are also chromed which makes them slick.

I don't know if it's deliberate, but the city hasn't been clearing the MUP to bare pavement this year. It is better when they don't as the path ends up smoother and there is less ice. One year they cleared to bare pavement, then there was freezing rain, then they dumped sand on it and it was nasty rest of the season.

In maybe another week they'll start the piles through the ice. The machine they are using has a long reach so the machine can stay on the shore. The finished up one side of the creek yesterday and started on the other side today. Flags are setup where they need to auger some holes.

Lots of people at the dog park. It's not a very well planned dog park. One of the boundaries is a creek, that freezes in the winter and dogs can escape. Early in the season dogs go out on the ice and fall through.

There is a lot of play in my fat bike cassette. Hopefully just a loose lockring. And I hope I can fix it without having to completely remove the rear wheel. Big rim, rack and Moonlander offset rear means I have to remove the brake caliper and deflate the tire to get the rear wheel off. Good reason most fat bikes use 190mm rear hubs instead of 135.

Yup, just the lock ring, but pulled the cassette off and gave it a cleaning. Those 11 speed 11-51 cassettes have so many loose rings not part of the spider. Was able to bungie the rear wheel to the rear rack to keep it suspended while in the work stand.

I find it hard to get the motivation to go out (road cycling) when it's "cold". Over the past 8 years I've only lived in Hawaii and Florida. Cold for me is sub 55 and even with arm/leg warmers and heavier gear for when it dips lower it's still fucking miserable. I'm a super small dude so even when it's 70 outside I still get cold. Either laugh at me or tell me I'm not the only one.

Forget about motivation, that's bullshit, realize it and ignore the excuses your brain comes up with, the hardest part is to get out of your house, when I force myself to go out cycling I never regret it later
Anyway just get better winter clothing, thermal base layer underneath everything, windjacket for long descents, gloves, head piece etc
My winter temps in southern Europe are very similar, it helps to somewhat warm up before leaving the house, like doing some random bodyweight squats, jumping in place

-20C ride today with a 20 km/h wind. I managed to dress fairly well for it. To keep my glasses from fogging I have to raise my goggles whenever I'm not riding into the wind. Adding an extra glove layer I should be able to get away without putting my bar mitts on.

The Garmin wasn't happy and shut off after a bit more than an hour even though it has 3/4 of a charge. I noticed it powering down, so I turned on the Strava app to record rest of the ride. My Garmin 4 generations older does a lot better in the cold.

Finished off a warmer than usual January for a total of 930 km. The past few cold days have made it very icy. When its cold car tires buff up the ice when cars start and stop (spinning and skidding).

2 week forecast shows another long stretch of good winter riding weather starting Friday.

They should start pile driving through the ice for a new bridge tomorrow. They had an auger setup when I rode past this morning. By this fall that road which is close to my place will go from being gravel, to paved with a shoulder.

It saves a lot of time going that way but when it gets dry during the summer cars kick up too much dust so I avoid it. If the wind is light or blowing along the road the dust lingers for minutes like a heavy fog. Bad to breathe and bad for visibility.

I took a look at what it would cost to join the local cycling clubs this year. The base fee for the governing body is $65 which covers admin and liability insurance for clubs. Then another $25 for the mtb club, $50 for the road club, $10 for the randonneur club, $10 for the touring club.

I randomly rode to Piedmont Park one day and it was sort of rainy but still really crowded, some kind of event with music and booths. that happens all the time there. turned out it was black gay pride day, which in Atlanta is a huge deal and would've been a monster event if not for the rain. I just rode around like usual and people watched. it poured for a while and I got under a big shelter with some kind of event going on for a while. everyone was really nice but I was some random weird beard cis white honky so it's not like anyone struck up a conversation, and neither did I, but overall it was still kinda cool

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I removed and readded my cadence sensor so hopefully that fixes it. I know I'm slow, no need to mention it.

I've had a random high max cadence value in the past a few times. I wonder if it might happen when you stop pedaling, and quickly pass the sensor a few times when leveling the pedals. I usually coast with one foot down, but sometimes I'll level the pedals on a long hill.

when I went just now, I was locking my bike and the dude who hangs out at the strip mall selling cologne and tasers out of his trunk said "you ain't gotta lock that. I wish somebody would touch that bike, you know we got you." I was like "haha, it's just a habit."
"I know that's right," followed by general praise for how cool my bike was from him and his buddies. damn it feels good to be a gangster, lol

Getting most of the in the creek work finished on the new bridge before the ice starts breaking up. I think they installed the concrete piece today using a crane as there was a huge one on site today, then gone at the end of my ride. -11C tomorrow, then warmer weather for about a week. The sun is getting strong enough I'm going to need to wear sunscreen until it warm enough to not wear a balaclava or end up with a really goofy face tan line.

If you ride in low intensity (zone 2) you don't really need sugar, otherwise yes, you should reintegrate carbs
Don't forget water and electrolytes either
But other than that you just gotta keep doing longer and longer rides little by little, with regularly frequency but allowing yourself to rest and recover in between and most importantly don't ride through pains or discomforts: better to stop for a week now than for months down the line
