wtf is wrong with mtb cranks?

why is it impossible to find 3x mtb cranks shorter than 170mm?
im short 170s give me horrific knee pain so i wanna do some 152s or even 140s but i simply cannot find any anywhere that have 64bcd holes for the granny gear
i found pic related on chinkshitexpress and it looks like the holes are supposed to be there but just arent drilled
is there anything out there or am i gonna have to buy a drill?

I'm 6'3 and ride 155-165mm. Trifags have repeatedly proven that short cranks are superior for all heights. Keep running your knees and fucking up your hip flexors though lol

How do you determine if shorter cranks for you? What kind of body proportions, if any, lend themselves to seeing greater benefits? I haven't felt any issue with 175mm (cranks on old bikes like that I'm used to, new bikes size L or 56cm) at 6ft. My inseam is a bit short, 31in pants fit as well or better than 32. I think I have long femurs compared to my tibias. I believe when I was picking out weight lifting shoes I got something with a good amount of toe drop on account of that and some measurements I did.

I will be buying a new bike in this month likely and will be replacing the standard compact crank with a semi-compact so while I'm at it, might be a good time to tweak crank length. Unfortunately a bike fit service is out of the question.

Short cranks mostly seem to benefit people who have issues with knee pain and/or ride in a very aggressive leaned over position. Aside from that, there's no way to know if they're for you except trying it. If you're buying a new crank anyway, maybe try going to 170, I made this same switch and the difference is quite subtle, you probably can't go wrong with a relatively minor change like that. Although why are you even buying a new crank? You can swap out 50/34 for 52/36 chainrings on pretty much every compact crankset that I'm aware of, those two have the same bolt pattern in almost 100% of cases.

if you're in the UK spa cycles had incredibly cheap triples in this size.
I beat aliexpress has square taper cranks in 4 bolt 155 or 165. maybe look into kids cranks. never had this issue because none of my cranks are 4 bolt

I think we all know that MTB has the lowest average IQ of all cycling disciplines (which is saying a lot considering that bmx and fixed gear exist). also, masculinity issues in MTB are significant. bigger=more manly. mtb is bro territory

1. time yourself / power meter / whatever on a few rides
2. slap some 165mm cranks on your bike
3. spin to win
4. go faster and notice how much better your joints feel and your posture/bike fit has improved

The big issue with crank length is how much your hips have to move on long cranks. by making them shorter, you can have a more "open" hip angle. it's much more comforable. And then secondarily you have less strain on your knees. All of this comfort improvement leads to more stamina, thus stronger effort, then more speed/distance/watts

the only issue is the "stand and climb" moments where long cranks are more comfortable when you are exhausted and moving like a turtle. the difference is minor and you just have to spin more. short cranks encourage gearing down and spinning as a solution to all climbs, and it works imho

That's exactly the type of task LBS really is for. Not changing tubes or selling blinkers.

Or you could get some of those bullshit adapters. Or the multi hole drill if you want to end up with crank in your shin. Anyway, bikes are not rocket science. Stuff like that is basic adjustments.

its not bery scientific and even professional bike fitters and stuff dont really know what exactly is correct
the 175 standard is extremely old and is based on some very outdated theory from the times before bikes had multiple gears
basically people ised to think you wanted a big gear for speed and a long crank for leverage, knee pain also used to be considered normal till very recently
nowadays in the post gears era most people much prefer to use an easier gear and pedal faster rather than a higher gear and pedaling harder yet we havnt changed the crank length to match the faster pedaling
theres alot of different theories on "correct" crank length but all we really know is that the 175 and 170 standards are simply too long for modern riding styles
bmxers figured this out long ago and roadies are still trying to figure out the science meanwhile mtbs just never even bothered
you can look at all kinds of charts and stuff but rly like all things on bicycles its personal
no maths will tell you, you just gotta feel it
if you get knee pain, find you often want to stand on the pedals, find spinning to be uncomfertable, and maybe find it hard to get your seat height perfect those are all potential signs your cranks are too long
as for how much shorter to make them you just kinda gotta guess, it could also depend onyour riding style and stuff like that too
unfortunately theres a big gap in mtbs between 170 adult cranks and 152 "kids" cranks but 152 would probably fit most people better than 170

but yeah ultimately you just have to try it and see, the science just isnt there yet because for like 100 years weve just ignored crank length entirely for some reason
for all we know 100mm or something might be right, all we know for sure is that our cranks are too long, id imagine in another decade we might have an actual proven theory on crank length since people are finally paying attention to it now that everything else on bikes has been refined to precision

it was annoying on one bike I had, the bike had a super high BB and a super low stack.
saddle was annoyingly high and bars had to be set very very high.
better to find a frame with low BB but nobody makes them, because lawsuits. lowest bb I've come across is the soma saga touring frame

All you need is a 3D printer, a drill jig guide bush, a drill and a hand tap. If you wanted to experiment on a scrap pair of cranks you could just freehand the drill as well.

Never been on Feebay or Scamazon then? There is a metric fuckton of triple cranksets on both with shorter than 170mm cranks. And lots on Aliexpress too but their search function sucks donkey balls so use google or something and maybe search for a brand name or keywords.

Roadies definitely haven't figured out short cranks yet. They're becoming more common but they're not mainstream yet. It's mostly trifags and TT autists that have fully embraced the short cranks, and especially the TT autists have been the driving force of short cranks even on road bikes. Just like they were the ones to bring noseless saddles to road bikes.

im gonna do an experiment and drill multiple holes too so i can see how short is too short
