Chain tensioning is too much for most homeowner riders to comprehend. A derailleur does that automatically.
The 2x/3x derailleur requires more learning curve but offers higher range, and the newer 1x drivetrains do better than most other hubs, at a fraction of the cost.
There're trade-offs for sure, but if Shimano Nexus was around in the '60s and onward it'd have had better implementation and more mass-adoption, but even then there're technical hurdles.
I used to love my IGH until I gave up, bought cheap shit derailleurs, and learned to stop worrying about whether I'd slip into a "neutral" at random.
