what are some good shoes for flat pedals that don't cost 150€+ & perform better than running/skate shoes, namely in the wet? bonus if waterproof/ankle guard

mostly for MTB but for some city riding too

some stuff I've looked at:

O'Neal Pinned Pro Flat (bonus ankle protector, about 62€)
Five Ten Sleuth MTB Shoes (bout 60€)
Leatt 1.0/2.0/3.0(picerl) Flatpedal Shoe (60-100€)

FiveTens are fine, but I never found them all that comfortable.

Shimano GR5s are also reportedly cheep and good.

I currently run some crank brothers stamp flat shoes and I rate them highly.

think im gonna go with the 5 10's since they're made by adidas and I can probably get the sizing right on the first time (since I can only get em online and I have other adidas shoes)

now to decide between freeride or sleuth or whatever version

Buy a shoe with a Vibram sole. That's the sole you want on a hiking shoe anyway. there are a number of companies like merrill or dunham or whatever who sell those low top hiking shoes with vibram soles. that's what you're going to want.

Myself? I just use last season's running shoe that I wore the EVA foam down on.

I've got Lems Primals and they're the best shoes I've ever used on nice big flat pedals. It's my go to MTB shoe now.

I have a pair of Bontrager Flatlines. They're comfy and so far outlasted my normie shoes. Easy to clean too.

Recently bought Berkshire Chucks and they're fantastic. Tons of grip on the pedals and good ankle protection.

something similar happened to my chucks
the pins dug holes into the sole but over time the holes became much bigger than the pins so my perfect foot position meant my feet kept sliding around the pedal
feels bad man

Couple years I guess I'm a frugal type and untill they grip those are fine but are quite slippy at the moment, those were running shoes so might not be the beefier but price wise are way cheaper than actual MTB flat shoes so I'm on the fence...

i never wore freeriders, but from reviews, they're more durable (in therms of the sole), a bit more narrow and lighter

I choose them instead of regular fr's due to the supposed extra durability
they are indeed a bit more narrow then other adidas shoes I have on the same size, but so far they've been nice, Im gonna buy some raceface chester pedals next to compliment the shoes

skate shoes and bike shoes are pretty much opposites. skate shoes have a lot of padding and a thin, flexible sole for "boardfeel". they can also have reinforced toe area and stiffness/material around the ankle for support. bike shoes don't have as much padding, and have a stiffer sole to support the foot and make better power transfer when pedaling.

Having used both, MTB shoes are less flexible and more grippy. That said, if you're a poor, skate shoes are a perfectly fine substitute if you already have a pair laying around
