Convince me not to switch back to flat pedals.
They maybe faste and better when climbing, but goddamn they're a nuisance on anything other than pedaling. If I switch from those, I'm definitely not interested in MTB pedals, I'll just ride like a normal guy again.

For me the biggest thing about clipless pedals is them allowing you to take your mind off of foot positioning and your legs in general. You just pedal. I cannot go back to flats for anything long enough to be considered a 'ride'.

I'm a size 15 shoe and I have a bad knee where occasionally I'll want to switch foot positions. I'll put enough miles to go around the world before I end up in a pair of SPD-SL.

I use Issi stomp XLs and whatever the non-current running shoe I own is.

There are pedals which are MTB on one side and flat on the other. Best of both worlds really, I had it on my MTB that I also used for my commute

These lose a lot of the benefits of both kinds of pedal. I find them better than pedalling a flat pedal with spd shoes and better than pedalling an spd pedal with normal shoes but worse than either spd pedal/shoe or normal shoes on flats.

why not try a compromise? spd-sl is a specific type of system, spd is halfway between flat and full on road but you'd have to buy new shoes that you can actually walk in. failing that, just go for flats with toe clips or straps, you can swap them out or totally remove them as and when you see fit. think you're overcomplicating this a bit. i've had the idea to buy a city cruising bike for a while now and when i do i'm probably going to stick spd pedals on there and choose one of the less ugly looking mtb shoes to ride with.

It's not retarded though. It's retarded if you're using road pedals. But with MTB pedals and shoes there's nothing wrong with using cipless for any distance. There are two bolt shoes that look like normal shoes. And then there are XC/CX/gravel race shoes that are just as stiff as road shoes. You can have two sets of shoes and hse the same bike with the same pedals for all of your riding.

I've just switched back to flats (my dumbass want to do it with no hurry since I've crossthreaded a pedal once), and yeah, being able to just hop on the bike on a moments notice is something else imho. Just for a trip around the block on flip flops because fuck it, why not.
I feel less like a poser with spd-sl and not being in any kind of "road ride".

I see. I really don't see a point in going somewhere by car, and upon arriving, riding my bike. So that's why I mostly ride around urban areas, roads and suburbia. If I were to ride on a traditional "road" course, it would change a lot for me.
Aside from that, I find the feet retention nice, but since I have to stop and go a lot of times, it gets boring after a while, specially on some busy crossings I often go through (a ton of them depending on the direction I'm taking).

it's not a stretch to just have a pannier with shoes in it. Takes like 20 seconds to change shoes.

Seeing as it's practically impossible to keep shoes dry in the rain on a bike so if you're a serious commuter you're gonna have to have a backup shoes plan anyway.

It obviously limits the utility of your bike for shopping and doing other stuff than riding to work and back though.

I got these exact pedals for my road bike. I live and ride in Manhattan and was nervous about going fully clipless and wanted more comfortable MTB style shoe when carrying back to and from apartment.

I kind of regret them now. Took me one ride to figure out how to smoothly clip and unclip at every stoplight. I have literally never used flat side.

i've always used flat pedals so i won't say much about clipless. i grew up bmxing and hitting dirt jumps and being able to get away from my bike without thinking about it has always been nice. the only time i crashed my road bike on a sandy turn, i was able to bail and roll. i think if i had been in clipless it would have been worse. the other reason i really like flat pedals is my rides aren't strictly rides. it's nice to walk into a shop, go for a hike, do some exploring on foot in the middle of a ride. i don't want to clomp around in cleats like im wearing ski boots.

i'd say no harm, no foul, you have a versatile pedal with a foot retention mechanism that works well, especially for city riding, and if for any reason at all you ever decide to ride that bike with normal shoes you have the option. i use spd sl but i'm riding road out in the countryside for hours. sometimes i'll even ride with normal shoes on that bike if it's only for a quick errand run or something. grip in that case is shit, obviously.

when i first tried clipless pedals everyone told me i was going to fall but the day never came, knock on wood. i understand the hesitation because the idea of attaching yourself physically to the bicycle can seem precarious for an already relatively dangerous activity but it's one of those things that if you never try you'll never learn and most people learn right off the bat. it's no great shakes.

If you want a commuter bike, get a commuter bike and put proper flats on it.

If you want to train and be a proper sportsman, use clips.

If you want one bike fits all, just use flats....you're not a serious cyclist anyway.

No, 15 miles one way if I take the longer route, 12 miles if I take the shorter, with 700-900 feet of climbing. Commute times vary between 45-55 minutes, I am in no rush.

I have never met anyone with double sided pedals who actually rides (not counting the random chud who does the once annual community fun ride so they can be interviewed by the local news channel as the 'local cyclist' who thinks bicycles belong on the sidewalk). For the life of me I cannot understand the mentality that drives people to buy them, maybe they're afraid of falling and they think if the pedals are mediocre the impact with the ground will hurt less for some reason?

I can see you never used road clipless pedals.
YOu dont have to rotate them, they will just turn with the back down so you just need to do the same (very easy and quick) motion everytime you need to clip on them.

I have a pair for my commuter bike. As I live in a place with proper winter it's not always possible to ride clipped in, it's either too cold and I need warmer boots than any of my cycling boots are, or the roads are all ice rutted and clipping in would be asking for trouble. So during winter my bike has hybrid pedals so it's always ready. But that's about the only use case I can come up with for them. And even then I could easily do with a good set of flats.
