I drove through a large new development suburb the other day (to pick up some bicycles), which had made many admirable attempts at urbanism ideas, high density well designed row houses, lots of greenery, mixed use developments, public transport, lots of traffic calming features. It seemed nice in many ways. The streets had speed bumps everywhere but amazingly still a 50km/h limit, not 30. And there were still cars absolutely everywhere. The guy I bought the bikes off said residents wanted it that way. In this pleasant green narrow street community with families and kids out walking around on a sunny day I was literally getting tailgated and seethed at for driving at a reasonable speed, by the fucking residents.
It would actually have been mildly sketchy to cycle around there. And this is a place trying to 'do it right'.
