i mostly rock the shittest imaginable cable lock that you could probably cut with strong scissors and have several $200-500 beaters plus a few bikes worth maybe $1000 each.
Also a D-lock but rarely ever use it. If i'm in a d-lock situation (in town at night for long periods of time) i'll generally take a true junk beater worth maybe $20-$50. If someone asked nicely i'd give it to them so getting stolen would only annoy me as much as having to walk home.

never had a bike stolen though. I think my bikes all look distinctive enough to be a liability for a thief, crusty enough to garner some mutual respect from bike crust theives, too old, too big often, and not worth much to a casual eye even when they are. And I pick good places to lock and don't live in an obscenely sketchy place.

these bikes are also fun to ride slowly on the footpath which is a nice way of taking in some nightlife and getting around drunk.

On a proper bike you kinda zoom around and are a bit detached from it all. I recommend everyone has a really cheap shit beater, the kind you walk up hills. Mine are in perfect mechanical condition though because I have autism and they are frame up custom builds just with junk parts only.

i dont leave my bike parked where it can be stolen. your bike should be inside your house or garage at night. don't give someone an opportunity to take it and they can't.

the only place i drive to is the store. no amount of racks, bags, even with a trailer is enough to go shopping unless you live alone. which is probably the case if you use your bike for shopping

Don’t really rely on them except for the most brief occasional dips into the store or pharmacy, or bathroom. And the one time I brought it to Martha’s Vineyard this summer.

I plan to get a rather nice bike somewhat soon but don’t believe I’ll ever let it out of my sight outside. People will break into your house if your bike is nice enough so for long rides I’ll be looking to have a buddy or something, stopping for refreshment at an outdoor business isn’t an issue but finding a porta-potty large brought to bring your bike into is uncommon (need to find a handicap sized one). Parks and sports fields here have them. If I begin commuting by bike I’m going to invest in a serious u-lock no matter how shitty a beater I’m using.

I have a $2k bike that I use when I know I won't need to lock it (going to a friend's house, having a little tour etc). I live in Fr*nce and if you leave your bike in the streets for too long it'll end up in Marrakech.
I have a folding bike that I use for daily errands and I can just take it with me everywhere without needing to lock it outside.

Once, but it was on purpose. Relatives handed me down a terrible "full suspension" BSO and I didn't want to deal with it, so I just left it by the road for several days. I pity whoever took it.

My bike isnt a target for theft, therefore noone steals it, even if it's left overnight. Helps there's like no crime here. Gets me to work no problemo though
