High speed rail will never be viable in large portions of America or even this corridor. it is faster and more convenient to drive in these areas, and the destinations are also not all that walkable meaning you would still need to rent a car when you get there.
But building dedicated electrified rail so if we ever reach a point where aviation fossil fuels become unsustainable or too expensive to fly, then at least there is an alternative built in place that can run off of renewables, and then cities and towns can work on zoning reform from around the stations outward, as long as it doesnt displace existing industry that cannot be moved easily
