The few times i've politely asked for help from a cop they act like i'm harassing them, but they'll wave you through breathalyzer stops, they don't care about riding the wrong way down streets, on footpaths (illegal), locking to anything, lane splitting, safely running red lights, speeding down hills, not having brakes or reflectors, etc, unless you did something blatantly reckless right in front of them.
They do sometimes harass you over helmet laws which is mildly annoying but it's as simple as 'oh ok sorry', it's not a fine unless you whinge back to them.
DOC rangers look after cyclists. They're helpful authority figures, who will give you water and advice and a lift if needed and stuff and so when they try to impose rules like asking you not to ride a road at night or bring your pet stoat, it's fair.
