In the Comecon countries, the insufficiency of their economies was one of the larger factors behind why railroads/mass transit didn't diminish as they did in the advanced capitalist countries. They couldn't afford the motor society. Memes about trains being communist aside, there's nothing inherent to the ideology that forced that development.
