I often read bicycle nerds but ching about mtbs being too small or too big or just right.
I saw and rode honking big 29ers and clownish small 26 just fine, both on and off road

Yeah because MTBs are to be coasted downhill a few times after riding the ski lift in the MTB park while dressed up like the smash mouth guy in "I ain't wearing that fag shit" oversized clothes and sunglasses that are so out of style they're almost in style again, before being tossed back in the SUV and driven home again, why would any of it matter?

Complete bullshit. Road cycling is just traversing smooth terrain. You look where you want to go and you move your feet. the difference between a correctly and incorrectly sized bike is like a minute or less over a hundred kilometers.
Off a road, on a mountain, you might want that thing to handle optimally unless you like crashing into rocks and trees.

I completely disagree and think sizing is important for ALL bikes but in the end, it depends on the skill of the rider. Bikes are supposed to be tools highly optimized for efficiency, however, each human is unique with different abilities, ratios, proportions, and preferences. In an ideal world, each bike would be custom made to their rider but in the real world, that would currently be time exhaustive and expensive to do. There is one counterpoint though, there are cyclists on the other end of the spectrum who believe geometry doesn't matter as long as the contact points (bike fit) are in the right place.

So now we come to an intersection, is geometry or fit more important?

its more to do with preferance and riding style but it does in fact matter alot
i much perfer a smaller bike with smaller wheels 24 inch even if i could find one in that size thats not a kids bike
i tried riding a modern 29 with a long reach and huge cranks and just couldnt ride it shit was like an suv in bike form
some people like that though i guess
for me a big bikrs just feels clumbsey and unwieldy
small bike is fun and nible and just all round easier to ride
but yeah you can adapt to either since in mountain biking you dont keep in one position anyway

i think the road bike thing isnt about speed at all but comfort
im not a roadie but i imagine just from looking that a tiny geo change can make a massive difference between comfy and agony for them
but yeah offroad its all about handling

also on an MTB you'll need to shift your weight lower and further back to avoid going over the handle bars

Longer rides than 2+ hours you'll really start to feel everything misdimensioned to your body.
Ride a whole day on a bike that doesn't fit your body dimensions and you start fucking your body up.
I spent alot of time & money on both road and MTB so I can ride for longer.
Depends how much you wanna ride?
You don't need to worry too much if you just sit on it an hour at a time, that's not enough time to break you.

To add to what others have said, on a road bike you're spending the vast majority of your time with your body weight on the saddle and your turning the pedals with your leg extension at its optimal distance and your core at a fixed distance from the handlebars. On a mountain bike you're constantly shifting your weight fore/aft, getting out of the saddle, and you're not going to leave your saddle height at ideal pedaling height (unless you have a dropper post that allows you to easily lower it when the terrain gets rough). It's that difference that explains why fit is less critical for mountain biking than road cycling/the range of frame sizes you can use effectively is wider.
