>>1876893Toyota are chasing their own tail because EVs basically make them obsolete.
Their big selling point as a brand is reliability.
EVs are just more reliable than any Toyota, as a baseline.
Less moving parts, less maintenance required, blah blah there’s a thousand papers and videos on the subject.
Point is Toyota exists best in the world of combustion engines, when the competition keeps breaking down.
What the hell are they supposed to do when Ford, VW, the Koreans, and even somehow GM have the reliability of a Prius, on every product?
Toyota becomes irrelevant that’s what. Or at least less noteworthy.
The reason they put all this time into hydrogen bullshit and insisting on hybrids is because they want it to catch on. (with other companies)
They want it to catch on because they want everyone to stay in ICE land where they are kings of the reliability ratings.
In EV land reliability is already solved.
A model 3 already beats a Prius in reliability. (THE most reliable ICE car, made straight from one of Japan’s best auto factories)
Tesla, while they definitely know their EV technology, are still a bunch of green-footed newbs who can’t get the panel gaps right.
To be beaten by them must be demoralizing.
Unfortunately other car makers aren’t going easily fall for red herrings like hydrogen, so Toyota’s whining will only ever be that, whining.
