Why does mass transit even exist when it takes 4 times as long to get anywhere as just driving? Busses and trains seem horribly inefficient and are just taking up extra space on the road that could go to cars

+ It's great for kids, the poor, and cheap people. The pricing isn't a problem for most people.
+ If you live in a town with good transit, it takes you where you need to go, you only have to wait 20 minutes or less for it to come, and there is good infrastructure for it (bus lanes, bus shelters, next-bus displays).

The main problem of course is anti-social people acting like savages. Homeless, ghetto, school kids, freaks, etc.

I drive to work with my car in 15 minutes, public takes over 30.
I drive to family in neighbour town by car in under 1 hour, public needs over 2 hours.

Same in Berlin. Plus getting driven around is, assuming one's train isn't sardine can-style filled, a whole lot more pleasant than sitting around in snailpace traffic.
One of the huge reasons driving cities to extend mass transit is simply how, upon the rise of mass motorization comically congested their roads have become, despite all the efforts put into building car-friendly infrastructure.
