>>1875043Had a 11 hour layover in BWI airport, so I figured it would be a decent idea to go to DC and see the main sights for a day
So I get the shuttle bus to the amtrak stop, and wait on the train - it is on the busiest intercity route in america, so it should be pretty frequent
>next train in 30 minutesok, so that's a bit shite. Go to buy a ticket
>machine broken, please buy ticket on trainok, so wait for train, and get on - there's like 10 passengers and 4 ticket inspectors (it's about 9am in March on a weekday, figured it would at least be slightly busy)
buy ticket (for reference, a similar distance in the UK is £7 (~9$) for 2 way travel, and the UK is famous for expensive train travel, so figured anywhere around $10 would be the standard
>$40 each waywhat the actual shit, the ticket examiners know it is ripoff and let me go on the way out for free, and I buy a ticket to get back to the airport (helps that one of them was irish, and we spent the trip chatting about the 6nations rugby that just finished)
get to DC, figure I'd get the metro to the pentagon and walk back over the day seeing the sights and return to union station to go back to the airport
>metro station entrance is covered in homeless people, need to step over them to get into it>next train is in 25 minutes>metro>?get out at the pentagon, walk to arlington. Security guy says this entrance is closed, you need to drive around the park and go in the other side, say I don't have a car today and it's a 1 hour walk with no pavement to get to the other entrance. Just pass by that then, and head over into the mall. Roads still dont have any pavements, need to walk on a shitty grass verge to get anywhere.
All in all, pretty cool stuff to see, shame the city and regional infrastructure is absolute pish
And this is lauded as a "transit friendly" city in the USA? It's a pile of shite compared to the most car dependent shithole in the UK.
