No. I live in a small town when I was a kid bikes were only really stolen by drunken teens to ride around town. It would usually be left at main roads.

Sadly that happened twice in my life so far. First time where they broke into the cellar and only took my bike and second was stolen from a bikerack. Both bikes were more or less beaters.

I used to live in a 2nd story apartment in a suburb that was as far North as the city bus lines went, so a lot of people gentrified out of closer in areas moved there. I left my bike on a 2nd story balcony with a ulock and while at work someone climbed up, sawed my lock off, and took it.

yes. it could have been avoided with a lock that costs more than 30 $ and or moving my bike to another lock up when something did not feel right

carry two thicck bike locks, .eg a U lock and a chain lock
never leave a bike un attended more than an hour lmao
dont keep them inna shed either, lots of bikes get stolen from sheds

No, but I have given back a stolen bike.

My neighbor sold me a tarmac fact 11 or some shit for $200. Way superior than anything I've seen. It has powertap pedals and electronic shifters and stuff. I bought a battery and junction box and got the shifters working.
I googled the SN and nothing was returned.

The owner rode up to me on a long boomer those (1000+ people) and started questioning me about it.

I had nothing to hide and it was obviously his. He was over the he fucking moon to have it back. He posted it on marketplace after a few weeks for $3500.

It was certainly his. He showed me the surveillance video and police report when it was stolen.

Yes, but only because my garage door was left open overnight. Never had a bike stolen in normal circumstances or after locking it in a public place.

The "neighborhood" you refer to would be the 13th largest state in the US, its a big city, trust me.

It's not like all of these events happened in the same block.

Mechanic neighbor selling me this bike for a bargain was nice. Me returning it was nice also, I guess youre right fren.

I do ride a brakeless fixie with clipless pedals so the average criminal would only steal it if he's throwing it on the back of his truck

In my life I've had 2 bikes stolen (both cheap), another bike I had I came back to find the front wheel had been bent out of shape and another time I had a small bag containing some bike tools stolen from the bik

What I'd do differently is
>invest in a good lock
>lock it up somewhere very visible with high footfall
>don't leave it more than a few hours unless it's somehwere you're very confident is safe
>don't leave anything conspicuously detachable on the bike (I leave easily removable lights on, but no-one really wants to risk anything for those)
