I'm a U.S. merchant mariner (30) considering living on a sailboat until I save up enough money for a house.
What do you think my budget should be? Are there some brands that are better than others? I'm capable of moving a sailboat up or down the coast for delivery, but I'm not an expert. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated
I'll be lurking the thread for a little while so please ask me any questions if they'd help

Just rent a room in a shared apartment. I think it's a better choice than leaving a boat unchecked for 4 months while you are working.

Most sailboats roomy enough to live aboard are in the marina 362 days a year. Hang out at the marina and see if you can rent one to stay in, as well as paying the owner for sailing lessons every now and then. May turn out that you've got more experience than the owner, though, in which case it might turn out to be a wash.

Speaking of wash, you can pick up a couple extra kopeks cleaning other boats in the marina.

So rent a short term apartment rental. Your theoretical vacation/port town you call home should have a bunch of apartments from seasonal snowbirds. This theoretical port should also have lots of half filled hotels you can negotiate a long term stay rate. Because you are, of course, doing long sea voyages.

what do you mean by this? I thought you said you were a merchant sailor? Are you suggesting you make 'deliveries' in a sailboat?

I still don't understand why you want to live on a boat when you work most of the year on a boat? Clearly a short term rental would be less than buying a sailboat.

The boat is portable. You can live anywhere the boat can go. Short term rentals are terrible. You have to pack up all your shit every time you move in/out, or put it in storage, which is even worse.

You can buy a "fixer-upper" 36' sailboat for under $20K.

No starter homes under 350k in your area?

If no consider buying a nice mobile home souble wide that solves the having to store your shit problem. All you have to pay is lot fees which are minimal.

I know a number of single people in transportation who just said fuck it and bought a nice mobile home

It would be much cheaper just to have an apartment, even if you aren't sharing it with a roommate. A "fixer-upper" cheap sailboat is still going to cost you a lot of money getting it fixed up to where you can safely sail longer distances. Marinas to keep the boat in aren't cheap either, and these days often have long waitlists for liveaboards. I really wouldn't want to leave a boat floating on an anchor or mooring ball for months on end while you're working either. All it takes is a line chafing through, a through-hull failing, and your boat is on the shore or sunk. There's just a lot more than can go wrong with a boat than an apartment or small house.

With regards to doing coastal sailing with no experience, you might want to rethink that too.

If you really are MM I hope you have a lot of respect for the power of the ocean and how much work it takes to keep a boat seaworthy. A lot of people seem to be on the "buy a 40-50 year old cheap sailboat to travel and live aboard", but most seem to find out early that they're in over their head and get out. Others, especially like the 2nd link, don't find out until it's too late.
