What is the point of a car ferry that only takes five minutes, in the middle of a huge city? Why don't they build a bridge?

because they cant build a bridge long/tall enough to accommodate marine traffic in a heavily urbanized area like london

They could build a low bridge that opens in the middle, like Tower Bridge, but not as fancy. It's only 300m from pier to pier. Much cheaper than operating two ferries with crew.

2) especially south london has not the space to expand roads
