I live in the West Coast of the US and I want to do an overnight trip on a boat. No particular reason why, I just want to experience it. Cruise ships are pretty much out of the question because even when they're offering "$100 per night" deals, you wind up paying $1k or more in the form of docking fees and taxes. Not to mention all the horror stories about shitty service and passengers acting like shitbags.

What are my other options? Are overnight ferries any cheaper (there's one between Alaska and Washington state, but that's the only one I know of)? Are there yacht clubs or groups that offer overnight trips? Are riverboat cruises more economical?

Location and seasonal restrictions don't really matter here since I'll likely be doing it as part of a bigger trip and I can plan around that. I may or may not be traveling with a friend.
